North West Travel Subsidy

North West Travel Subsidy aims to assist young athletes from the North West with travel costs.

It aims to encourage participation in identified sport and recreation activities for athletes living in the regions of the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne. 

North West Travel Subsidy is not an open funding scheme and is only available to athletes by way of application from their Regional or State Sporting Association or another relevant not-for-profit organisation approved by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries – Sport and Recreation.

About the program

The North West Travel Subsidy aims to encourage participation in identified sport and recreation activities for athletes living in the regions of the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne.

Regions eligible for travel assistance

  • Kimberley
  • Pilbara
  • Gascoyne.

Funding may be used for

  • Regular competitions recognised by a state controlling body;
  • Travel to training and development camps;
  • Representative fixtures (excluding State and National) and carnivals; and
  • Inter-town journeys over 500km return.

Applicants must comply with all requirements as listed above to be eligible for assistance.

Funding may not be used for

  • School sport activities and travel to State and National events.

Assessment criteria

  • Regular competitions recognised by a state controlling body;
  • Travel to training and development camps;
  • Representative fixtures (excluding State and National) and carnivals; and
  • Inter-town journeys over 500km return.

Who can apply

Applicants must reside within a designated region. Eligibility is limited to athletes aged 13-18* who reside within recognised regions for this scheme and representing their sport or active-recreation individual club or association.

*In certain circumstances, the department may consider athletes outside of this age-band on a case by case basis.

Organisations/associations must be:

  • Affiliated with a State Sporting Association or Industry Peak Body recognised by the Department;
  • Incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 (WA);
  • Have an Australian Business Number (ABN); and
  • Have acquitted all previous department grants.

Who cannot apply

Organisations NOT eligible include individuals, groups of individuals, organisations seeking funds for metropolitan based programs, State Government departments and agencies and educational institutions including schools, universities and TAFE colleges.

Level of funding available

Funding is available based on two support schemes:

  1. Individual
  2. Team funding.

Team funding can be assessed when four (4) or more athletes from the one sport who meet the eligibility criteria are travelling to the same event or championship.

Individual funding support

Where athletes who meet the eligibility criteria are travelling to an event or championship in Perth, then the following individual funding support will be provided:

  • Gascoyne: up to $600 per person
  • Pilbara: up to $700 per person
  • Kimberley: up to $800 per person.

Where athletes who meet the eligibility criteria are travelling to an inter-regional event or championship, then the following Individual Funding Support will be provided:

  • Gascoyne: up to $600 per person
  • Pilbara: up to $600 per person
  • Kimberley: up to $600 per person.

Team funding support

If four (4) or more athletes who meet the eligibility criteria are travelling to the same event or championship in Perth then the following team funding support will be provided:

  • Gascoyne: up to $2000 per sport
  • Pilbara: up to $2300 per sport
  • Kimberley: up to $2500 per sport.

If four (4) or more athletes who meet the eligibility criteria are travelling to the same inter-regional event or championship then the following team funding support will be provided:

  • Gascoyne: up to $2000 per sport
  • Pilbara: up to $2000 per sport
  • Kimberley: up to $2000 per sport

How to apply

Completed application forms are submitted through the department’s regional office in which the applicant body is located and/or the program/event is being conducted. All supporting documentation is required with each application.

Funding rounds timeline

Organisations can only apply ONCE per year in any one category

Assessment and notification

An assessment will be made to determine if the application is eligible by assessing it against the grant criteria. If approved, a Grant Agreement will be entered into which outlines the grant conditions and acquittal requirements. Once signed and returned, the grant will be paid directly to the applicant body (organisation/association).

Successful applicants

No grant monies will be paid directly to an individual. The applicant body will be responsible for the acquittal of the grant and so will be responsible to forward any approved funding to individuals as deemed necessary.
