Young leaders are happy campers
The Department of Sport and Recreation’s 2010 Youth Sport and Recreation Committee (YSRC) kicked off its year with a Leadership Camp at Point Walter from 28–29 January. There, the young people involved came together for two days of team building, orientation and lots of recreating!

Each month the committee of 20 secondary students from various schools across the Perth metropolitan area meet to discuss a range of topics relevant to youth in sport and recreation.
During the course of the year, the group will be involved in a range of opportunities to expand their understanding of the sport and recreation industry, and will also be used as a reference group for a variety of initiatives across the department.
YSRC members are students who are passionate about and already involved in sport and recreation, demonstrate good leadership skills and are positive role models to their fellow peers.
It will be a busy year for these young people, who in addition to the two-day adventure camp, will get an opportunity to:
• Organise and present a major project.
• Get involved with a number of DSR projects and events.
• Network with a range of sport and recreation industry professionals.
• Provide feedback and advice on current issues being faced by youth in sport and recreation.
• Enhance their leadership and life skills.
• Develop new friendships.
Members will also be given an opportunity to gain a number of accreditations including:
• Active After-School Communities qualification – Community Coach training program.
• Beginner Coaching General Principles qualification.
• Strap and Wrap accreditation.
• YSRC participation certificate for their resume.
