Pride of the community
An Australian Rules Football Team of newly arrived young people is taking to the field with a much bigger purpose than just winning. The Edmund Rice Centre Lions team is working hard to improve the leadership qualities of young people in its community through football training and a leadership development program.
On Saturday 24 April 2010, Edmund Rice Centre Lions players coached a football clinic for around 30 children at a 'Come and Play Day' organised by Big Dreamz Entertainment, at Butterworth Park in Koondoola.
The clinic started with an overview of Australian Rules Football, followed by some skills development sessions, and culminated in a game for the young people to participate in.
The more than 30 children participating enjoyed themselves, and learnt lots about football, with the Lions players acting as positive role models.
The Edmund Rice Centre Lions team was formed in March 2010, and have been training together since. The team is coached and captained by the Sports Team of the Edmund Rice Centre Mirrabooka Youth Leadershiop Group and supported by the WA Football Commission and other sponsors including the Department of Sport and Recreation.
The next step is to build a supporter-base to provide a huge home ground atmosphere for a 'Big Match', which the team will play against a local football club in late May 2010.
Those behind the team are also focusing on improving the leadership qualities of these young people through football training and a leadership development program.
It is hoped these talented young footballers will inspire other young people who come to Australia to play football, act as positive role models and encourage others to get involved in their community through sport.
The Lions train behind Herb Graham Recreation Centre, Chesterfield Road, Mirrabooka on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4.30pm.
