Surf's up for Geraldton students

The sun, sand and water that are so much a part of the Geraldton lifestyle were recently transformed into a training ground for about 200 primary and secondary school students who took part in an Indigenous Surf Life Saving Program.

Beach. The program, comprised of a mixture of practical and theory sessions, was run in conjunction with the summer 2008 and 2009 surfing seasons.

The initiative is supported by the Department of Sport and Recreation’s (DSR) Indigenous Sports Program, which provided funding through Surf Life Saving WA. The local DSR office coordinated the program with the assistance of the Geraldton Sporting Aboriginal Corporation.

“It is estimated the 2009 program came into direct contact with about 200 primary and secondary students in Geraldton through the Geraldton and Champion Bay surf life saving clubs,” said DSR Mid West Indigenous Sports Development Officer Adrian Bartlett.

“Three representatives of Surf Life Saving WA were in Geraldton for three days during the latest program, visiting Bluff Point, Rangeway and Beachland primary schools. Students from the local Indigenous Netball Academy and Midwest Football Academy also participated.”

Planning is underway for the 2010 program, possibly to be accompanied by a mini-carnival between participating schools in Geraldton in December.
