The who of Sportsfun

Sportsfun Coordinator

The Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) is the government agency providing leadership in the sport and recreation industry in Western Australia. The vision for junior sport in Australia is to provide safe and enjoyable environments to encourage the long-term participation of young people in sporting activities.

This vision is based on the belief that, when presented and organised properly, sport:

  • Makes a significant contribution to the physical, psychological and social wellbeing of young people; and
  • Is an effective way of producing benefits for both the individual and Australian society (Junior Sports Framework, Australian Sports Commission)

Junior sport is a vital part of our unique lifestyle and the Department of Sport and Recreation is strongly committed to Sportsfun and the vision for junior sport in Western Australia. It oversees, coordinates and supports the program.

Sportsfun Coordinator responsibilities:

Leader Training

  • Provide a Sportsfun manual to each Secondary Coordinator to assist with Leader training. This manual is available on the DSR website at: www.dsr.wa.gov.au (link to forms);
  • Provide Secondary Coordinators with the opportunity to register as a Level 1 Coaching/Officiating General Principles Coordinator to enable Coordinators to accredit Year 11/12’s with Coaching General Principles and Introductory Officiating General Principles.

Resources

  • Distribute resources including:
    • Sportsfun Operations Manual on the DSR website;
    • Sportsfun Operations Manual hard copy (if needed);
    • Certificates – Participants, Leaders, Coordinators;
    • Merchandise – hats and whistles; and
    • DVDs for coaching and officiating courses.

Consultation

  • Provide ongoing advice and support to assist with the planning and maintenance of the program; and
  • Speak to Parents & Citizens Associations on the Sportsfun program, emphasizing financial controls.

 

Secondary Coordinators/Community Coordinators

Secondary and Community Coordinators are supervisors of the Leaders (link to leader section) and the program overall. Generally Secondary Coordinators are members of the secondary school teaching staff or administration staff while Community Coordinators should be a recognised member of the community organisation being represented.

Secondary Coordinator/Community Coordinator responsibilities:

Recruitment and Enrolment of Leaders

  • Recruit interested and capable students from Years 8–12 as Sportsfun Leaders; and
  • Ensure enrolment forms are filled out by Leaders and returned to DSR (link to forms).

Leader Orientation

  • Organise an orientation day for the Leaders with the Participants a week before the start of the practical component of Sportsfun.

Training

  • Train the Leaders in the basic principles of coaching, officiating and skill development.

Maintenance of the Program

  • Liaise with Primary Coordinators:
    • Organise initial contact;
    • Follow up regarding attendance and punctuality of leaders and any other issues;
  • Supervise the program to view the Leaders’ coaching techniques to ensure they are being supported and all programs are delivered safely;
  • Provide positive and correct feedback on coaching sessions – particularly in the early weeks of the program;
  • Organise meetings with Sportsfun Leaders, if required, to discuss coaching strategies and maintain their interest and commitment; and
  • Organise an awards presentation to award Leaders and Participants with certificates at the completion of the program.

Liaison

  • Liaise with DSR concerning the overall operation of the program.

Evaluation

  • Participate in any Sportsfun evaluation procedures, as requested;
  • Complete and return the evaluation form at the completion of the program (link to forms).

 

Primary Coordinators

Primary Coordinators are supervisors for the Primary School Participants. They are usually primary school teachers, parents or other sanctioned adults.

Primary Coordinator responsibilities:

Recruitment and Enrolment of Primary Participants

  • Gauge primary school/children’s interest for participation in Sportsfun;
  • Ensure enrolment forms are filled out by Participants and sent to Secondary Coordinator; (link to forms)
  • Inform supervisor / children of the commencement date, days and times that Sportsfun will be operating at your school;
  • Try to enrol at least 24 children, as this is the suggested minimum number required to start a Sportsfun program. The ideal number of enrolments is 48 children (i.e. 4 groups of 12);
  • Keep a reserve list and if necessary recruit more children if numbers drop off; and
  • If using ‘User-Pay’ system, collect participants’ fees (link to Funding Groups).

Leaders Orientation

 

  • Attend meeting prior to the commencement of the Sportsfun program.

Before each Session

  • Liaise with the Leaders and organise the equipment that is required for the session; and
  • Mark the attendance roll of Participants and ensure the children are in their correct groups.

During Sessions

 

  • Attend every session and provide positive and constructive feedback at the conclusion of the session (particularly in the early weeks of the program);
  • Use the Leader Performance Checklist (link to forms) to assist with providing feedback and improving Leaders’ performance; and
  • Be responsible for overall supervision and discipline at each session.

Liaison

 

  • Liaise with Secondary Coordinators regarding any issues (e.g. conduct, absenteeism, control).

First Aid

 

  • Ensure equipment, practices and areas are safe;
  • Be available and prepared to attend to injured Participants or Leaders;
  • Have access to a First Aid kit/school nurse at all times;
  • Keep a log of incidents, responding actions and follow-up, to ensure procedures have been thoroughly adhered to; and
  • Inform Secondary Coordinator of any Participants that have special needs/medical conditions.

Wet/Hot Weather Alternatives

 

  • Have alternative areas set aside for Leaders to conduct these sessions; and
  • Liaise with Leaders and the Secondary Coordinator on whether or not a session will be indoors or outdoors.

Evaluation

 

  • Participate in any Sportsfun evaluation procedures, as requested; and
  • Complete and return the evaluation forms to DSR at the completion of the program (link to forms section).

 

Leaders

Leaders are generally recruited from secondary schools or community organisations and are aged between 13 and 17 or Years 8 to 12 at school. Leaders generally work in pairs when delivering modified sports to Participants.

Sportsfun Leaders’ responsibilities: (put on separate sheet so can download and hand out to leaders)

Attendance

 

  • Induction/training days;
  • Information meetings;
  • Refresher training sessions;
  • Weekly coaching sessions; and
  • Assessment and feedback meetings following the sessions.

Program Operation

 

  • Liaise with the Primary Coordinator concerning the equipment required for your session;
  • Check emergency/illness procedure at your venue;
  • Take directions and feedback from the Primary and Secondary Coordinator;
  • Prepare the required number of coaching sessions for your group using the sport-specific ‘Companion Books’ or DVDs and other resources; and
  • Inform the Secondary Coordinator and your partner if you are sick or unable to attend a session.

Commitment

 

  • Be reliable and punctual;
  • Always observe the guidelines of the program;
  • Be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the children you are coaching;
  • Maintain the focus of your session on fun, participation and skill development;
  • Use the Sportsfun whistle and cap provided during training; and
  • Support the other Sportsfun Leaders at your school.

Leadership

 

  • Be a positive role model for the children you are coaching;
  • Provide the best possible coaching that you are able to;
  • Remember to be encouraging and provide positive feedback to your students; and
  • Maintain a positive attitude and motivation in your role as a coach.

 

Participants

Participants are recruited from primary schools, generally from Years 1 to 7. The program aims to target children who do not participate regularly in community and/or school sport.

Reference Contacts are Coordinators who have already implemented Sportsfun into their schools and classes. They offer guidance and suggestions to teachers looking to implement Sportsfun into their schools.
