2009 Sports Volunteer of the Year East Kimberley Marcia Constantine. The award was announced by the Department of Sport and Recreation's (DSR) Kununurra office recently, and was this year held in conjunction with the 'Dob in a Volunteer' program run as part of the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley's Club Development Project.

Marcia received a $250 gift voucher from Red Sun Sports for her efforts.

While her win was announced at the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley’s Thank a Volunteer Day, Marcia unfortunately could not be there.

So local Club Development Officer Ben Flynn decided to track down a very surprised Marcia and, with the help of another tennis club member, present her with her award during Tuesday night tennis.

This also gave Ben the opportunity to congratulate Marcia in front of the very people she works to help out each year at the Kununurra Tennis Club.

Marcia has been Secretary of the tennis club for seven years and has been a driving force behind many initiatives including junior coaching, weekly social tennis, fundraising and facility development, as well as performing her secretarial duties.

Shire President Fred Mills congratulated Marcia and the club. "The community contains many hard-working volunteers who make this community a great place to live. Within the sporting community, Marcia’s work has helped the tennis club to develop into a key club for our community with high class facilities to play on," he said.

"The sport and recreation activities and clubs we all enjoy would not exist without volunteers," said DSR Manager Kimberley Dean Holder.

"They are the leaders within our community, and the people who stand up to put in the effort and contribute to the sports and activities they love, so it's great to see people like Marcia recognised and shown that they are valued."
