Soccer hits East Kimberley
Football West representatives Kerry Henry and Nelson Filipe took the Indigenous Football Program to the East Kimberley in September.
It was a very busy but worthwhile and rewarding week in the Kimberley, working with over 300 children from Halls Creek, Frog Hollow, Warmun, Wyndham and Kununurra.
Participants enjoyed skills sessions and small sided games, equipment and coaching resource were left at the schools for continued use.
Schools came into Kununurra at the end of the week for the Inaugural Saunders Cup with many putting to practice what they had learnt during the week, talking positioning and tactics as well. Barefoot and running on some pretty hard surface the participants displayed their raw talent. Two teenage boys from Wyndham DHS prepared to move to Perth to pursue football seriously.
State Education and Development Manager Andrew Bettell will do a follow up visit next month to discuss administration and facilitate accreditation courses in Kununurra as they to assist the region in establishing a football association.
Special thanks to Nick Allen, Club Development officer Shire Wyndham-East Kimberley, Leah Thorpe and Pablo Garcia from Garnduwa and the Department of Sport and Recreation for their much appreciated support and assistance. We look forward to working with them in the future to further develop the game in the Kimberley.
