Skate Class At Mosman Park WorkshopThe sessions have proven highly popular, with upcoming sessions to be held at YMCA HQ in Leederville (Saturday 23 October) and Bullsbrook Skate Park (Saturday 6 November).

So far the 14 workshops, which are conducted free of charge, have received nothing but positive feedback, with the majority of sessions reaching maximum capacity.

Opportunities for Western Australian youth to be taught skateboarding by accredited coaches have been few and far between in previous years. However thanks to the Streetwise initiative that has begun to change.

According to the program’s coordinator Gemma Richman, skateboarding is not typically an activity that parents have been able to teach their kids.

“Lots of kids are interested in skateboarding, but often their parents won’t know where to start. Our one-day workshops are a great way to give kids a chance to try skateboarding and learn about the value of sport and recreation,” she said.

Gemma said skateboarding was a sport that achieved a balance between self expression and physical activity

“It’s not a team sport, but there is still a highly social atmosphere. Skateboarding is often overlooked as a form of physical fitness. It’s highly beneficial for kid’s cardiovascular health, balance and flexibility,” she said.
