Seniors Have-a-Go Day 2011
It’s that time of year again when the Seniors Recreation Council of WA presents its annual Have-a-Go Day.
18 October 2011
This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, and will be held on Wednesday 9 November at Burswood Park, Great Eastern Highway, between 8.30am and 3pm.
Have-a-Go Day, as always, is a free event that invites the over 45s to try a range of sporting and recreation activities, then hopefully go on to join a sport or recreation club. It also provides a large range of displays that present information on a wide range of topics and interests.
Last year in excess of 12,000 people attended the event, and this year is expected to be bigger and better with 200 sites.
A thrilling line-up of activities and displays includes the Bunbury Troop Tenth Light Horse Show; Camera Electronics Photo Competition for images taken on the day; medieval display; a climbing wall; exercise to music; wood chopping; pole walking; tennis; tai chi; and archery. Over 45s can also try their hand at dry casting; golf; canoeing; giant chess; and brain training.
Floral and travel displays will also be present and the North Coast Marine Modellers will have model ships on display and on the lake.
A new inclusion to this year’s event is the Tech Savvy Seniors program implemented and run by the Seniors Recreation Council of WA. The program encourages seniors to ‘Have-a-Go’ with technologies such as mobile phones; GPS geocaching; and gaming consoles like the Nintendo Wii and Xbox Kinect. The program aims to inform seniors about current technologies in an effort to help bridge the gap between seniors and younger generations as well as promoting some of the health benefits of being active at home or in the great outdoors.
The official opening will be conducted by the Hon. Robyn McSweeney MLC, Minister for Seniors and Volunteering, at 9.25am.
Channel 7 personalities such as Natalia Cooper; Monica Kos; Sally Bowrey; Tina Altieri; Emmy Kubainski; Ric Ardon; and Basil Zempilas will be in attendance and 882AM 6PR and Curtin Radio 100.1FM will be doing on-site broadcasting throughout the day.
Special services on offer will include free tea, coffee and water from the hospitality tents sponsored by Have a Go News, Channel 7, 882AM 6PR and Phoenix Insurance Brokers, eye sight testing by Lions Eye Institute, hearing test by Lions Hearing Institute and the Royal Life Saving Society will be providing three first aid sites on the day.
Food vendors will be in attendance with free food tastings from Burswood Entertainment Complex and Fresh Finesse.
