Risk management and insurance details

Before implementing the Sportsfun program, it is imperative to conduct a risk management assessment, to assess potential risks and enable you to develop a risk management action plan. Going through this process will ensure that all appropriate safeguards are in place for the successful running of your Sportsfun program.

Sportsfun’s philosophy is to provide an environment that is safe for all involved. The attached ‘Child Protection Policy’ conveys information to all Coordinators and Leaders regarding their conduct and about minimising risk exposure. This policy will assist you in the Risk Management assessment process. (Link to start of child protection section)

Background and criminal record checks are only part of an overall strategy that responsible organisations can employ to ensure children remain safe. Organisations need to implement a range of other risk management strategies such as those listed below to ensure that they are creating child-safe environments:

  • Development of policies (including complaints procedures);
  • Child-safe guidelines for staff and volunteers; and
  • Appropriate recruitment, selection and support of new employees/volunteers.

LEADERS

All registered Leaders are covered under the Department of Sport and Recreation’s ‘Personal Accident Cover’ if injured whilst acting in their official capacity. In addition to the ‘Personal Accident Cover’, Leaders are also covered by the Department of Sport and Recreation’s ‘General Liability Cover’ which will meet all sums which the authorised volunteer may become legally liable to pay whilst acting in their official capacity.

PRIMARY SCHOOL PARTICIPANTS

There is no personal accident cover for primary school students who are Participants in the Sportsfun program. In the event of an injury where a claim of negligence is unfounded, a student's medical costs should be submitted to Medicare or their family’s private health insurance funds.

SECONDARY SCHOOL PARTICIPANTS

Those secondary students that are involved in the program as part of their physical education studies or extracurricular activities will be covered by the Department of Education and Training’s ‘General Liability Cover’ whilst acting in their official capacity.

PROGRAM COORDINATORS SCHOOL-BASED

Teachers responsible for the coordination of this program are covered by the Department of Education and Training’s ‘Workers’ Compensation and Public Liability’ covers.

NON-TEACHERS ACTING AS PRIMARY SUPERVISORS

Non-teaching supervisors who are not volunteers are not provided with cover, and should arrange their own.

Volunteer non-teaching supervisors are provided with the same cover as Leaders.

NON-TEACHERS ACTING AS SECONDARY SUPERVISORS

Non-teaching supervisors who are not volunteers are not provided with cover, and should arrange their own cover.

Volunteer non-teaching supervisors are provided with the same cover as Leaders.

NB: From a risk management perspective the Department of Sport and Recreation would suggest that any non-teaching Supervisors be appointed as volunteers. Such an action allows for greater control over those appointed, as there is then a direct relationship between the Department and the Supervisor. Such a control will assist in mitigating any potential losses.

Please note that all authorised volunteers need to be listed on a register to assist the Department in underwriting the risk.
