Two of the key focus areas of the Department
of Sport and Recreation’s (DSR’s) Strategic Directions (SD4) 2006–2010 are
Organisational Development and People Development.
The two key objectives are to:
- Promote, lead and support technical skills development of people in the sport and active recreation industry; and
- Promote, lead and support professional development in the areas of leadership, management and governance in the sport and active recreation industry.
DSR is investing in the future of sport and recreation leaders by providing professional development opportunities. There is an opportunity for five people working with women in sport to attend the International Working Group (IWG) World Conference on Women and Sport which provides the vehicle for participants to share experiences, strengthen international connections and find ways to stimulate action at local, national and international levels.
The aim of this opportunity is to bring back what you have learnt from the international conference to the Western Australian sport and recreation industry, particularly information regarding the growth of women in sport.
Some of the relevant topics being covered at the conference include:
1. Women, sport and human rights
- United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals, UN Charters and Conventions
- Empowering women and girls through sport
- Challenging
gender stereotypes in sport
2. Financing and media for gender equality in sport
- Gender budgeting
- Quality media coverage
- Women, sport and the social media
- Marketing
and sponsorship
3. Physical activity and health for women
- Health benefits and risks
- Physical activity and mental health
- Lifelong participation
- Energy and nutrition
4. Sport and social change
- Sport, peace and development
- Inclusive/exclusive practices
- Women in sport governance and other leadership positions
- Trafficking, sexual harassment and abuse in sport
5. Engaging Generation Y and Z in sport and physical activity
- Girls’ motivations and aspirations
- Quality physical education
- Extreme sports
- Role models for girls in sport.
Required information
To be eligible for consideration for this opportunity, you must complete and sign the attached application form and include the required documentation.
Applications that do not address the eligibility criteria or do not provide ALL the required information will be deemed ineligible.
This includes a letter showing support of your application by your current employer AND the sport and recreation organisation you are involved with.
Please forward your original completed application form, including ALL the required supporting documentation, to the following address by 4pm on Friday 26 February 2010.
Eligibility
Entry into the program is competitive so applicants must:
- be a resident of Western Australia;
- be involved with a sport and recreation organisation; and
- have the support of their current employer and the sport and recreation organisation they are involved with.
Funding arrangements
The funding will be paid (up to $2,000) to the recipient’s sponsoring sport and recreation organisation on the understanding that those funds be allocated to the applicant to meet the IWG World Conference cost.
Failure to attend the conference will require the recipient sport and recreation organisation to return the relevant funding to the Department of Sport and Recreation.
In circumstances where only partial expenditure has occurred, recipients will be required to refund remaining funds to the Department of Sport and Recreation.
Selection criteria
Applicants must complete the Application Form PLUS attach the following information:
- Curriculum Vitae.
- Letter of support from their current employer and the sport and recreation organisation they are involved with.
Assessment process
Interviews may be conducted. All applications will be considered on merit, based on the information provided. The assessment panel will assess each application. The functions of the assessment panel are to review all applications, applicant’s responses to the selection criteria and referee reports, and to ensure the process is transparent, merit-based and fair and equitable for all applicants. The panel then provides recommendations to the Department of Sport and Recreation.
When the selection process is finalised, applicants will be notified in writing.
Additional requirements
Recipient sport and recreation organisations will be required to enter into an agreement with the Department of Sport and Recreation, which identifies certain obligations relating to the funding.
These include:
- Availability to speak about their learning experiences at an event organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation. This must be completed within 12 months from the date of the conference.
- Meeting the acquittal process requirements.
NB. Should the applicant fail to meet these requirements the funding must be repaid to the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Conference venues
The main conference venue will be the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre located in Darling Harbour, a deepwater cove of Sydney Harbour. The Darling Harbour area is Sydney's most exciting tourism precinct, located on the waterfront within walking distance of the heart of the city.
The final day of the conference will be held in Sydney Olympic Park, home to the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This final day also features a Women's Sports Festival celebrating women's participation and achievement in sport.
