Peter takes on the Pilbara

After learning the ropes as an instructor in the Department of Sport and Recreation’s (DSR) recreation camps, Peter Myers has stepped up as the new Manager of the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) Pilbara office.

Peter started in the role in August and also brings his experience as a Director for Advanced Marketing for Australasia, and before that as a naturopath, to the role.

On Peter’s ‘to do’ list is to support the great programs already existing and being developed in the Pilbara and bring together skills to secure the continuity of quality sport and recreation for the future.

Peter says it was his background in naturopathy that opened his eyes to the real benefits of sport and recreation.

“Sport and recreation can play a big role in the recovery process and the mental state of mind of patients,” Peter said. “The physical challenge and the sense of community sport and recreation provides gives people the motivation to get through illness.”

Peter says regional communities were also a setting where the benefits of sport and recreation were played out.

“Sport and recreation is the social glue of many communities in regional areas and provides opportunities to not only keep physically and mentally healthy but also to socialise and form long-lasting friendships,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to really getting my teeth into my new role and looking at ways to foster more partnerships with local organisations both at the grass roots level and at the regional planning level to increase participation.

“There are already some great partnerships and programs in place and I want to make sure that sport and recreation opportunities, and the benefits they bring, continue to be available to all people in the Pilbara for generations to come, no matter where they live, including in our remote communities.”

DSR welcomes Peter to its team and wishes him every success in his new role.
