Background

In 1996 Perth Oval was subleased from the East Perth Football Club to the newly established Perth Glory. Temporary scaffold seating was placed in the middle of Perth Oval for Perth Glory games during the Perth Glory season. During the WAFL season, the scaffold seating was removed and WAFL fixtures were played on the ground. This continued until East Perth Football Club made the permanent move to Leederville Oval in 2003.

In 2003 the State Government and Town of Vincent committed to the conversion of Perth Oval to a dedicated rectangular stadium for 18,500 spectators.

In 2004 Perth Oval was reconfigured from an oval to the existing rectangular stadium. This development created a permanent rectangular bowl and a conversion of the historical Fred Book stand to accommodate corporate amenties.  Temporary grandstands were installed in anticipation of subsequent stages in the longer term.

In January 2009 the Town of Vincent announed a proposal to develop Perth Oval to 25,000 to accommodate the Western Force, currently using Subiaco Oval.

In 2010 the Department of Sport and Recreation prepared a master plan to develop Perth Oval to a permanent 25,000 seat stadium.  This master plan was endorsed by Cabinet in November 2010.

Additional temporary scaffold seating at the east end, corporate boxes and a large marquee were erected.

Current seating capacity is 19,485.

Cabinet has approved $95.1 million for Stage 1 of the Perth Rectangular Stadium redevelopment.
