Outreach for Diversity Program in full swing
United Maylands Junior Football Club will host Football West’s Outreach for Diversity Program in a special event across the next two Saturdays with special support from Smarter than Smoking, as the club commemorates a year since the passing of one of its favourite sons, Kirubel Abebe.
He passed away following a tragic car accident not far from the club’s home of Gibbney Reserve, Maylands.
Abebe was off to church with his cousin’s family when their car was involved in a serious accident.
The 11-year-old Koondoola resident, who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp but migrated to Perth with his Ethiopian family in 2001, died in Princess Margaret Hospital from head injuries.
The family and community received a flood of support from Perth well-wishers and other communities locally and nationwide.
Over the first two Saturdays in July, United Maylands Junior Football Club will open its doors to other well-wishing clubs including Balga Soccer Club, Dianella Soccer Club, East Fremantle Soccer Club and Vic Park Rovers Soccer Club as well as teams representing the Ethiopian, Somalia and Zimbabwean communities.
The opening ceremony will commence at 12.00pm Saturday July 3 and the closing ceremony and final presentations for participants will take place at 4.30pm on Saturday July 10.
Participants from visiting clubs will join the United Maylands players to participate in a day of football fun on both days from noon to sunset at Gibbney Reserve.
The event will feature the fun-filled inflatable pitch for the younger players for the 8s teams to play in, a couple of 12s age games, a masters competition for over 35’s and an open age category.
Entertainment, food and games will bring some joy to the event proudly supported by Smarter than Smoking.
