The National Officiating Accreditation Scheme (NOAS) was established in 1994 to assist National Sporting Organisations to develop a group of skilled officials. The NOAS is a national education and training system for officials at all levels. It is a great opportunity to learn about officiating and also to gain an industry recognised qualification.

The NOAS has a vision that all Australian sporting participants, irrespective of their age, gender, level of sporting ability or choice of sport, have access to highly qualified and experienced officials.

The NOAS aims to develop and implement programs that will improve the quality, quantity, leadership and status of sports officiating in Australia.

NOAS courses include the following components:

  • General principles — fundamentals of officiating and event management
  • Sport specific — technical rules, interpretations, reporting and sport specific roles for officials
  • Officiating practice — practical officiating and application of officiating principles

There are a number of benefits of registration with the NOAS. These include:

  • industry recognition — officials who accredit through the NOAS are recognised by national and state sporting organisations and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC)
  • discounts — NOAS accredited officials receive discounts on some resources available through the ASC
  • National Officiating Scholarships — NOAS accredited officials are eligible to apply for the National Officiating Scholarship Program run by the ASC.

NOAS courses are conducted by the appropriate national, state or regional sporting organisations.

The ASC network of State Sport Education Centres and officiating principles agencies conduct officiating principles courses.

For further information contact the state officiating coordinator for your sport or Jacqui Jashari at the Department of Sport and Recreation.
