Last year’s inaugural race attracted 670 starters, and organisers are confident the race will continue to attract competitors and spectators, given the main drawcard.

Current World 24-hour Solo Mountain Bike Champion Jason English will be the star turn. While in the region he also will visit several local schools.

English, whose visit has been made possible through a grant from the WA Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) to the Perth Mountain Bike Club, is using the race to prepare for his title defence in the 2010 World Championship, to be held in Canberra in October. The Port Macquarie Physical Education teacher won the World Championship in Canmore, Canada, in July 2009.

The Perth Mountain Bike Club and the DSR have also bought World Champion English cyclist Jodie Willett to WA as part of the Country Sport Enrichment program, which utilises influential elite sports people to promote sport in country towns.

President of the Perth Mountain Bike Club Tony Tucknott said the event had tremendous potential and organisers were keen to take it to the next level.

The Classic is an event that caters for riders of all ages and abilities. The event features three distances: the 100km course for those looking for a serious challenge, a 40km course that takes in some of the finest off-road cycling tracks the region has to offer and a 14km course that is popular with juniors.

This year’s event is on Saturday 18 September, starting from Dwellingup Football Oval.
