Midnight Basketball returns to City of Armadale

The hugely successful Midnight Basketball program will bounce back into the City of Armadale on Saturday 21 May.

The first of two eight-week competitions will be held at the City’s Armadale Arena in Townley Street for local young people aged 12-18.

Player and volunteer registrations are open now at www.midnightbasketball.org.au/locations/armadale

Midnight Basketball is an innovative Australia-wide program combining sport and life skills workshops for teenagers.

Held on Saturday nights – traditionally a time when there are few services and activities available for youth - Midnight Basketball provides a fun, healthy outlet for their energy along with teamwork, leadership, life skills, a meal and a safe bus trip home.

Armadale Midnight Basketball was launched last year and attracted 160 young people, along with 51 volunteers in total for the three tournaments held.

Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds commended the program and urged business and the community to get behind it.

“The success of Midnight Basketball lies in its strategy of diverting kids by offering them an enjoyable, safe alternative activity on Saturday nights,” Cr Reynolds said.

“It is essential to have community support in the form of volunteers and local businesses can also contribute funds or in-kind donations.

“Participation in Midnight Basketball is free, so we need as many helpers as possible to ensure its continued success.

“The City of Armadale is proud to be involved in the program by providing the Armadale Arena venue and administrative and coordination support.”

Armadale Midnight Basketball runs from 7.30pm until midnight. Young people play basketball matches and participate in a variety of compulsory life skills workshops such as team-building, leadership, conflict resolution, communication skills, health and wellbeing, job readiness, decision-making and problem solving.

They are also provided with uniforms, a healthy dinner and a bus ride home.

Volunteers can assist with scoring, catering, supervising, workshops as team managers and other roles. Basketball knowledge is not needed.

Register to be involved online or contact Armadale PCYC on 9399 1091 or the City of Armadale on 9399 0637.

Armadale Midnight Basketball is proudly supported by the Department of Sport and Recreation, City of Armadale, PCYC, Office of Crime Prevention, Department for Child Protection, Communicare, Armadale Youth Resources, Commonwealth Bank, Polytechnic West, Drug Arm, Department of Health and Ageing, South Metropolitan Public Health Unit, WA Police and WA Spit Roast.
