Twenty-eight Western Australian competitors, across four divisions
qualified to compete at the National Championships following their results at
the YMCA HQ/Department of Sport and Recreation WA State Finals in February. 17 WA skaters made the trip to the Nationals,
the highest state contingent, making up 25% of the total competitor numbers.
Last year Josh McMurray (17), Maddington local, not only had the chance to represented WA at the National Finals but managed to win his division. Following his 2009 win Josh starred in a television commercial for series sponsor Mountain Dew and also picked up two skate industry sponsors.
Josh was considered the favourite for the 2010 finals and performed well to take out the 18 & Under Sponsored Skater division. The height of his tricks, commitment and consistency were highly rated with the judges. Fellow WA sponsored skater Jesse Ballard (16, Mandurah) placed fourth.
The remaining WA competitors also performed well amongst a strong field of competitors. Raoul Poncin (13) won the Encouragement Award in the 15 & Under Division and Daine Brown (18) of Duncraig placed 5th in the 18 & Under Non-Sponsored Division.
Skateboarding is continuing to develop as a sport in WA. As part of a joint two year project YMCA HQ and the Department of Sport and Recreation will be hosting skateboarding workshops across the state over the next six months, aiming to introduce the sport to beginners and increase the skills of existing skaters.
