Lions bring home Harmony Cup
The Edmund Rice Centre Lions' victory in the recent Harmony Cup match was a one point thriller.
02 August 2011

After a false start delaying the date, the match was played against Scripture Union (SU) rather than the Balga Detached Bombers as initially planned.
Meanwhile, Balga Detached and Catalyst, two organisations at the forefront of working with marginalised young people, fielded teams to play in the curtain raiser. It was a hard-fought contest with Catalyst eventually taking the honours.
The Lions arrived at the ground and held a minute silence in the changerooms before the match.
This was the one they had been waiting for. After running through the cordon of cheering kids, the game was on. The Lions kicked the first goal and were answered with four from SU, before they kicked another. SU went into the last change leading by three goals, with their height giving them the edge in the marking contests.
After some inspirational words from their coaches and senior players at three-quarter time, the Lions rallied in the last quarter and were able to win the majority of contested possessions on the ground. They kicked a goal in the dying seconds of the game to win by a point in a thriller, 7 4 46 to 7 3 45.
The whole ground erupted in celebrations and the Lions were overjoyed at their Harmony Cup victory.
The team is grateful for all the support, and looking forward to the rest of 2011.
The Edmund Rice Centre Lions are an Australian Rules Football team of newly arrived young people. The team was formed in March 2010 and has a new group of players for 2011. The team is coached and captained by the Sports Team of the Edmund Rice Centre Mirrabooka Youth Leadership Group and past Lions players and supported by the WA Football Commission, the Department of Sport and Recreation and other sponsors. It is looking to build a supporter-base to provide a HUGE home ground atmosphere for all of the matches
that the team will play in 2011. The Lions are dedicated to serving their community and focused on improving the leadership qualities of these wonderful young people through footy training and a leadership development program. It is hoped these talented young footballers will inspire other young people who come to Australia to play footy, act as positive role models and encourage others to serve their community through sport. The Lions train at Barry Britton Reserve, Balga Ave, Balga on Wednesdays and Fridays at 4:30pm.
