Indoor cricket team ready to bowl them over
The Western Australian Lord’s Taverners State Indoor Cricket Team is putting the final touches on preparations before it takes on the rest of the nation at the annual Lord’s Taverners Shield.

The event, which will take place from 25–31 July in Silverwater, New South Wales is an annual competition for athletes with an intellectual disability. The competition also involves selection of an Australian squad that will compete internationally.
The team recently had its uniforms presented by Western Warrior Luke Towers.
Recreation and Sport Network Sport Development Manager Richard Orr said having someone of Luke’s calibre on hand had proven to be inspiring for the players.
“Being a Western Warrior, Luke is a professional athlete, someone that the players certainly learn something from, particularly those who want to compete at a high level,” said Richard.
“We have a complete pathway for our players. We currently have two programs running in Guildford and Cockburn Indoor Cricket centres. Both have been absolutely fantastic and the opportunity is there for players to play socially but obviously if they want to take the competitive pathway then we fully support that.”
State Team Manager Adam Shaw said team members felt confident they would be among the contenders.
“This year we have had an extended pre-season, we started training in February with a squad of 20 which we have slowly whittled down to 10. The majority of the team competed at the shield last year and the guys feel that they have the nucleus to do something special,” he said.
“We know that we can look to our senior players in Nathan Ball and Grant Cross and they will always perform for us. This year though (Head Coach) Steve Mountford and I are really hoping that the rest of the guys can really step up and make a contribution. It will be exciting to see who stands up.”
Adam indicated Queensland was the team to beat, and that no matter the result he believed the team would do Western Australia proud.
The Recreation and Sport Network and the Lord’s Taverners State Team would like to thank the WACA, Green promotions, Justin Langer, Skywest, Mounts Bay Waters, Fremantle Football Club, All Seasons Sanctuary golf resort and the Lions Club for their invaluable contributions. They would also like to thank major sponsor, the Lord’s Taverners Western Australia. Without their support many of the players would not be able to attend the championships.
