Inaugural Pilbara Sport and Recreation Conference 2011

This year, for the first time, the Pilbara will get a sport and recreation conference of its own. The Pilbara Sport and Recreation Conference will be held by the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) in Port Hedland over three days: Thursday 19, Friday 20 and Saturday 21 May 2011. The best news is attendance is free.

Come to one day or come to all, just like the region itself the conference has a lot of ground to cover but it will be well worthwhile.

Aimed at all levels of sport and recreation in the Pilbara, each day of the conference has a different focus.

“The conference is a great development opportunity for those in the Pilbara sport and recreation community,” said DSR Manager Pilbara Peter Myers.

“We want to involve, and benefit, as many people from as many parts of the industry as we possibly can, so each day has been designed to attract a different group of people.”

Thursday’s focus is on Aboriginal communities and their sport and recreation priorities. The sessions are targeted at Aboriginal organisations from these communities and companies and organisations with the capacity to provide assistance.

Friday’s focus is on planning in the Pilbara’s major centres. This day is aimed at those involved in the planning of sport and recreation facilities and active open space, such as local government planners and recreation staff, larger corporations that provide or fund recreation facilities or influence population growth, and other agencies involved in forward planning.

Saturday covers the priority issues facing clubs such as volunteers, promotion, planning and raising funds. This is aimed at sporting clubs and the agencies working to support them.

“This conference replaces the Northern Regions Recreation Conference previously held in Broome every two years. While those who attended the Northern Regions Recreation Conference found it very beneficial, the distance resulted in low attendance rates from the Pilbara,” Mr Myers said.

“All workshops are open to anyone interested in attending. Feedback from the conference will be used to shape the framework to guide future sport and recreation development.”

“Don't miss this chance to hear from an exciting array of speakers and network with other members of the Pilbara sport and recreation community.”

Clubs travelling from outside the Hedland area to attend the Saturday sessions can receive a small fuel subsidy to help offset their travel costs. Subsidies are offered per person and in the form of a fuel card, which will be issued upon registration at the conference in Hedland on the Saturday. Attendees are encouraged to car pool – the more people in the vehicle the more fuel will be covered. There is a limit on the amount of subsidies available and these will be allocated on a first in first served basis as registrations are received.

All registrations need to be in by Friday 13 May. A conference program and registration form can be downloaded by clicking on the link below:
