The
department’s network of four metropolitan recreation camps – Ern Halliday;
Point Walter; Woodman Point; and Bickley – won Best Outdoor Activity Provider (Government)
at the City West Function Centre gala ceremony on 20 April
2011.
Also a winner on the night was Robbie Myers, whose outstanding contribution to the industry saw him crowned the industry's Outdoor Leader of the Year.
Hosted by Outdoors WA – the peak body representing the outdoor adventure and recreational activities sector in WA – the awards were judged by a panel of outdoor recreation professionals.
“I am absolutely delighted to see the consistent efforts and dedication of the DSR Recreation Camps team to providing quality camp experiences throughout a very hectic peak season recognised with this award,” Minister Waldron said.
“The camps work hard to provide a rewarding and memorable camp experience for all who attend but the benefits don’t stop there – their entry-level programs are an ideal introduction to a range of adventure recreation activities, and a stepping stone to a healthy, active lifestyle.”
The Minister said the quality camp
experience also provided participants with a range of learning opportunities and
life skills.
“Recreation camp programs teach independence; accepting responsibility and leadership; cooperation and teamwork; problem solving; decision making; dealing with challenges and adversity; building self-confidence, the list goes on.”
“Through providing a context for participation in outdoor recreation activities, the camps also play an essential role in the department’s quest to maximise opportunities for all Western Australians to participate in sport and recreation.
“I congratulate all involved on the great work they do and for a well-deserved win.”
