hello

Hi I’m Mike Doyle the Shire of Broome Club Development Officer.

Fullname:Mike Doyle
I’ve been in the CDO role now for just over a year, and have been amazed by how fast sport is developing in this region. I understand the positive influence a vibrant and innovative sporting scene has on the wider community. Sport and Recreation promotes a healthy lifestyle, social inclusion and through shared experiences can help to build a respect for community.

I understand the positive influence a vibrant and innovative sporting scene has on the wider community. Sport and Recreation promotes a healthy lifestyle, social inclusion and through shared experiences can help to build a respect for community.

It is an exciting time for sport in the Kimberley region. With this in mind I’m committed to supporting our sport and recreation volunteers. Last year four new associations were formed and a sports awards night was held to recognise our volunteers. My role is designed specifically to support our sporting clubs and associations. The Sport and Recreation CDO provides a valuable link between the Shire of Broome and the sporting community. Through communication, education and recognition the Broome Shire Sport and Recreation CDO assists clubs and associations with their development and ensures they remain sustainable. I’m looking forward to assisting our region’s clubs and associations with their development as Broome grows.

The Club Development Officer program has been running in the Shire of West Arthur for three years

Fullname:Maxine McKenzie
The Club Development Officer program has been running in the Shire of West Arthur for three years and has been very successful in assisting club members to access funding, information and training that helps their clubs run smoothly and have better facilities. I think clubs really appreciate having a club focused person in their local government who they can go to "for everything".

Hi, I am Ben Armstrong the Club Development Officer at the City of Gosnells.

Fullname:Ben Armstrong

I have been in this role for the past three years and consider myself one of the 'veterans' of the Club Development Officers Scheme. Over the past three years, I have assisted clubs to build their capacity and become more sustainable. This has included developing policies and procedures, offering new resources such as the Club Management and Sponsorship Guide, and assisting clubs to overcome some of their management issues. The Club Development Program has also assisted clubs in becoming established, such as the Gosnells Basketball Association. Once I return a married man in April, I am keen to provide further support to clubs and build on the achievements of the City of Gosnells Club Development program. I look forward to hearing from your club this season.

CDO Workshop

Fullname:Ryan Thompson

Hi Everyone

I recently attended the half yearly Club Development Officer workshop held by DSR to give us updates on the latest happenings in Clubland. It was great to catch up with other CDO's from around the state and exchange ideas about what club issues there are.

It was also great to get firsthand experience using the new Clubs Online website launched by the DSR in March. This tool is going to be fantastic in promoting club development resources as well as making it easier for all clubs to use these resouorces for the benefit of their clubs.

I know I'm excited about the opportunites it will produce!

Cheers

Ryan

Getting Started

Fullname:Lauren Rampling

Greetings from Exmouth - I'm the new Club Development Officer for the Shire of Exmouth. I'm starting to get to grips with the CDO role, after only recently starting. Attending the workshops in Perth have really given me some focus.

This week I attended the PCYC Auskick Jnr Football Season Launch, it was a great event, with lots of people. I'm sure having "Dipper" present helped, as did the sausage sizzle, I hope next time I can be part of it and assist the clubs with big events like this.

Sports Taping Workshop

Fullname:Michael Gaffney

Hey there, just wanted to give an update of the sports injury prevention, management and taping course held in Denmark last Monday evening. The course was a complete success with 26 people participating in the course. Special thanks goes out to the Denmark/Walpole Football Club, Great Southern Coaches Club, DSR Great Southern, Denmark Shire, Sports Medicine Australia and Brad from Denmark Physio.

The workshop was very interactive with most of the time spent looking at the practical aspects of taping - having a go at strapping and feeling the support of the different taping methods for different joints.

The workshop was held at the Denmark/Walpole Football Club's newly renovated and extended club rooms, with the clubs players training on the oval below. Catering was provided by the Denmark Scouts, thanks goes out to the Scouts - no food went to waste as the players got stuck into the rest of the catering after training!

A fantastic event with participants getting a lot out of the course. Michael :-)

Positive response to recent CDO initiatives

Fullname:Mike Doyle

A big thank you to all the volunteers who have attended recent seminars in such terrific numbers. Both the Presenters Course and the Coaching General Principles Course were well supported. Thanks to those dedicated members at your club you now have extra skilled volunteers that can help your club develop.

The positive response is proof that the current collaboration between DSR - ie Dean Holder and Simone Fountain - and myself here at the Shire is working well. You're ongoing support only encourages us to strive to assist you further.

There has also been a great response to the clubs online website tool. Broome Saints FC and Broome Speedway are the latest clubs to benefit, and there are a few others on the list to meet with me. Hopefully all clubs keen to have a website will be accommodated in the near future.

If you have created a website or have discovered some funky aspects to making the site look great, please let me and your fellow clubs know - and dont' forget to put a link to the Broome CDO webpage - www.broome.wa.gov.au/cdo/clubdev.htm

My latest newsletter will be there also, as always if you need anything just give me a call, cheers

Welcome back

Fullname:Lauren Rampling

Hello out there, it's been a while since I last blogged - one of the reasons for this is that I've been off getting married - so the observant ones of you may notice that there's been a name change.

I've got lots of plans for Exmouth, the first one is a meeting for all clubs to look at getting more using this site; a social event and discussing issues and opportunities for the local sports clubs.

I'm also involved in the new Skatepark in Exmouth, and this will be a great facilitity for our skaters. I'll keep you posted about this.

I'll be heading to Carnarvon soon as well to meet with my CDO colleague there and the DSR Reps.

If you're interested in anything I've mentioned today please give me a ring or email me

Right back to work!

Lauren

NEW RESOURCE TO HELP NEW VOLUNTEERS

Fullname:Mike Doyle
A new resource based upon a very successful metropolitan publication is about to be launched in Broome to assist new and existing volunteers.

I am currently working on a new publication to assist clubs. The Shire of Broome Club Management Guide is designed to provide you and your members with a simple informative resource. The guide will assist you in continuing to provide opportunities for people to be active in our community, to learn new skills, and most importantly to ensure there is more time to enjoy themselves through sport.

When combined with other key documentation the guide can form the basis of an induction pack for new committee members and established ones, so that everyone on your committee; is aware of where your club is heading, know the necessary procedures they need to follow, and understand what is required to ensure your club is not only sustainable, but developing.

I will be publishing the document shortly and intend to distribute a copy to each club. So stay tuned for more information.

Latest News for Sport in Geraldton

Fullname:Ryan Thompson
Fees and charges discussion evening in Geraldton on Wednesday 11th August.

Hi to all Mid West Sporting Clubs

Fees and charges are a very important issue in sport and in particular those for juniors. With the proposed changes in the Ground Management Arrangements and the fees and charges for sporting groups, I will be conducting a discussion session at the Edwards Road Chambers to detail what the proposed changes are and how they will affect sporting clubs.

Evening begins at 5.30pm with a short presentation of the changes and will include plenty of time to ask questions of City staff.

I would strongly encourage all Clubs and their members to attend to hear first hand, the benefits of the proposal and to ask any questions they feel need answering before any decision is made to implement any of the changes.

No need to RSVP, just come along and enjoy the evening.

Loof forward to seeing you there!!

Regards

Ryan

Wyndham Sports Meeting

.Community Sports meeting at Wyndham Community Club, Thursday 2 September at 6pm.

The Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley in conjunction with Department of sport and Recreation is pleased to be chairing the Wyndham Sports meeting at Wyndham Community Club, Thursday 2 September begining at 6pm.

It has been evident that there is a demand for more sporting activities for adults; however few people have the time or resources to coordinate and run the sports. The purpose of the meeting is to identify what resources are available, what the community is interested in, and to provide information, advice and support in getting them up and running and making them sustainable.

Premier's visit with all the Midwest's Sporting Clubs

Fullname:Ryan Thompson

Hi Everyone

The Premier of WA, Mr Colin Barnett,  was in town this week and attended a function specifically for sporting clubs to ask questions and hear what the State government has instore for the region.

The main topic of conversation was the Sporting Futures Report and the impacts of the principles and policies contained within, specifically those relating to co location, multi purpose facilities and state funding. The Premier empahsised the need for clubs to look closely at shared, multi purpose sporting facilities as a way to meet both the immediate and future demands of the sporting clubs in rapidly expanding Mid West.

These points will be discussed in greater detail as part of the consultative process being undertaken by the City in the coming months.

Until next time, take care

Ryan Thompson

JUNIOR SPORTS FORUM

Fullname:Mike Doyle
How can you make your sport a safe, fun environment for your children?

Junior Sports Forum

DSR, Garnduwa and the Shire of Broome will coordinate an important forum on September 16 for all junior sporting associations.

The Junior Sports forum will include a presentation from a representative of the Western Australian Sports Federation’s, Safe Clubs 4 Kids program, and an opportunity for our sporting community to discuss current issues surrounding junior sport.

The Safe Club 4 Kids program is designed to educate and remind clubs of their responsibilities toward our children.

It will increase your awareness about child abuse, and increase your awareness about how we can contribute to provide safe and friendly environments for them to play sport.

Unfortunately this sporting season has seen a decline in behaviour at some of our town’s sporting events - players and umpires verbally and physically abused, and fighting amongst junior ranks.

Is this how we want Broome sport to develop?

If your club has not experienced any negative issues, is your club prepared if something was to arise?  Are you aware of your club’s responsibilities?

If you are serious about your sport and you want to provide, not only the best environment possible for your members, but the best possible processes should something untoward occur, then it is highly recommended you and members of your committee attend this forum.

There will be plenty of opportunity to discuss the issue as representatives of your sporting organisation, as parents, or as members of the community keen to ensure our children have the opportunity to play sport and enjoy themselves at the same time.

JUNIOR SPORTS FORUM

September 16, 2010

Shire of Broome Function Room.

5pm – 7pm

Refreshments provided.

Latest Developments

Fullname:Deborah de Jonge
I have been working with my neighbouring CDO on developing a Clubs Conference in the Great Southern region. I'm also looking at the possibility of working with clubs to develop a 'have a try night' to help clubs increase participation.

A Clubs Conference is a great way to increase the skills of your club and committee. Sharon Miniter and I are looking at running a conference in March 2011 which will allow clubs to come together to discuss and share ideas and solutions to issues. Topics we will be looking to cover will be; Keeping it Green (water use, irrigation and cost saving for your ovals), foward planning for clubs, alternate revenue streams, a boot camp for committees and much more..... The day will be topped off by dinner and a guest speaker from the sporting industry (tbc).

Additionally, whilst on my travels I have identified that some clubs in certain areas are struggling for participants. I am looking at running 'have a try nights' which will encourage kids to get involved in a sport that they would not normally have the opportunity to try. Getting junior sports filtering through effectively into senior sporting clubs and teams is one of the key ingredients for the sustainibility and success of your club.

If you have any ideas, or comments, please dfon't hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards
Deborah

1 month down

Fullname:Natasha Hazell
1 month in and I'm learning so much. There are so many resources out there that I have been able to get my hands on to help my clubs. And there are some great people in those Clubs too.

Well - Who'd believe that a month has past already! My first 5 weeks has just flown by. In 5 weeks my club contact list has grown to over 50. And I know there are plenty more out there who are just having a spell in the off season.

I had a great response to the 1st Club Canning Newsletter, and I am starting to get Schools on board who want to recieve the publication. I am planning a relaunch for Club Canning in January to really kick start Sport in the City of Canning into the new year.

Clubs have also received their profiling survey, and I already have a couple back, which I am very excited about. I'm looking forward to getting more back and getting a larger overveiw of where clubs are doing well, and where they may need more support.

Yesterday I had a meeting with the President of one of our football clubs. The club struggled through last season, and is really looking to grow and create a new, positive environment in the new year. The president is new, and after only a few weeks in the job, has made a few small changes, that have already improved the facilities and made the club alot more welcoming. His passion and desire to see success in the future, along with his willing to learn and work with those around him makes my job in helping him, a pleasure. With the positive attitude and a little guidence and support, this club is well on it's way to a becoming a family club with a positive environment.

I am looking forward to meeting more clubs and seeing how I can help them.

See you around the grounds!

Tash

GRANTS WORKSHOP

Fullname:Sharon Miniter
Do you know what to do when applying for a CSRFF grant?

As all shire councils are different and have different procedures when applying for grants I am running a workshop within each of the 5 shires in my collective to give sporting clubs the heads up as to what is expected of them from their first thought of applying for the CSRFF grants to having a visit from DSR and then the LGA point of view.

The Great Southern Development Commission (GSDC) will also be tagging along so sporting clubs can find out how they can benefit from the Royalties for Regions funds.

My first shire of the rank will be Jerramungup which will be held on the 5th April at the Jerramungup Sports Club.

So til we talk again....

Volunteers set for Broome Sport's highest honour

Fullname:Mike Doyle
The Broome sporting community is preparing to celebrate the 2010 Broome Sports Awards

The Broome Sports Awards has sold out it in less than three days. All 140 tickets for the evening have now been snapped up. The Judges have had to make some extremely tough decisions, but the winners have been selected.

The annual event acknowledges the achievements of members of Broome’s sporting community. In just its second year since the Broome Sports Association (BSA) re-established the event, the quality of nomination continues to remain outstanding. Thirty six nominations were received for the awards for the seven categories.

There has now been more than eighty nominations in the two years. It just goes to show how many people are actively involved in the community. Those nominated showed a consistent level of outstanding performances, amazing dedication and a huge amount of passion.

A huge thank you to those who took the time to nominate also.

By acknowledging these often unsung superstars it is one way to not only recognise their achievements, but hopefully encourage them to develop, be innovative and continue to make the Shire of Broome’s sporting community such a vibrant one.

Stay tuned to hear who has won!

Broome Sports Awards Winners announced

Fullname:Mike Doyle
More than 150 people attended the 2010 Broome Sports Awards. And the winners are....

Blair Day is the 2011 Sports Star of the year. The Broome Surf Life Saving Club member was announced as the winner in front of 150 people at the Zeebar on Friday night.

Day had a fantastic year claiming the Northern Territory Open Iron man champion title and winning the Open Ironman, Surf Race, Malibu Board and Open Surf Ski Race at Broome’s 2010 Be Active Sunset Challenge. Perhaps the greatest example of his true champion credentials was the fact he gave away many of his medals to children in the Nippers program as he said they had performed really well.

Day, who had recently finished 31st in the gruelling Coolangatta Gold Ironman event, was still in the Eastern States and unable to attend the presentation, but said he was honoured to receive the award.

It truly was a night of champions with Commonwealth Games Javelin Silver medallist, Kim Mickle, guest of honour. Mickle inspired the audience with her stories of resilience and success, but it was the local heroes who stole the show.

The thirty seven exceptional nominations were all acknowledged, but there could only be one winner in each category. Saints Football Club’s WKFL and under 13 premierships, combined with a strong focus on helping the community saw them win the Club Sport Award. Lyle Buck’s fifth league fairest and best playing for Looma Eagles saw him win the Remote Community Sportsperson, and continued hard work from Eunice Yu earned her the prestigious title of Volunteer of the Year.

Billy Minn’s professionalism at the Broome Golf Club, particularly his work with the Prom Am was rewarded with a Special Recognition Award.

Broome’s junior ranks appear extremely healthy with some terrific nominations in the Rising Star Category, but none could match the under 17 state representation of Lauren Mainwaring whose excellent cricket performances ensured she was a certain winner.

The final award of the night went to Julie Bonner. Her Service to Sport award was just reward for more than a decade’s worth of dedication to the Broome Touch Association.

Category winners.

Club Sport – Broome Saints FC

Remote Community Sportsperson – Lyle Buck (Football)

Volunteer of the Year – Eunice Yu (Basketball)

Exciting New Year

Fullname:Natasha Hazell
It's 2011! Time to make the most of the head start I got in the last 3 months of last year and consolidate.

I spent my first 3 months gaining and maintaining contacts, meeting great people and planning for the City Of Canning's Club Development Program. I am Currently working hard to put the finishing touches on the Club Canning Launch - where we will re brand the Club Development program, and become more accessible to clubs within the City of Canning.

I can't wait to meet volunteers who I haven't had the chance to meet, at the Launch. I am also looking forward to hearing Brad Hogg, Former Australian Spin Bowler, speak about his career and about is ongoing involvement in community sport. I think that will be the highlight of my year.

I am also putting the finishing touches on my Events Calender for the year - which will be handed out at the Launch. There are some great workshops, including RSA, Resus and Sponsorship this year. Any training you would like considered for the future, please feel free to let me know, and I will add it too my future events list.

2011 is Year of the Volunteer +10 so Club volunteers will be recognised through out the year in Club Canning Newsletters and other City of Canning events. Make sure that your club is onboard Club Canning so you don't miss out!

I hope that you've had a Safe and Enjoyable holiday season, and l look forward to working with you in 2011

Club Canning is off the ground again, thanks to a great turn out and wonderful night at the launch.

Monday January 24 saw the Re-launch of Club Canning. The night was opened by City of Canning Mayor, Joe Delle Don, and attended by Local MP's, Councellors, DSR, recreation stakeholders and over 45 local club representives.

Brad Hogg was the key note speaker for the night and kept the audience entertained with ancedotes from his Australian Tours and His games in Local Clubs.

The highlight of Brad's presentation was getting the youngest member of the audience, Vinnie Longo, up with him and letting him wear the 'Baggy Green.'

The night was a great oppurtunity for clubs to meet Tash, their CDO and network with other clubs.

A special thanks to Geoff Moor, Fiona Armstrong, Penny Wright, Michelle Phillips and Mia Fogarty for their contribution and assistance in the lead up and on the night.

The next Club Canning event is our Winter Club Briefing on Monday February 21 in the Civic Function room. Please get your RSVP to Tash ASAP via email - natasha.hazell@canning.wa.gov.au

Breakfast of Champions to celebrate new beginnings.

Fullname:Mike Doyle
President’s Breakfast 18th February, 2011 Mangrove Resort Hotel 7am – 8.30am

Key figures from Broome’s sporting community will gather for a president’s breakfast to mark the official opening of the sporting season on February 18th at the Mangrove Resort Hotel.

The event hosted by the Shire of Broome’s Club Development Officer, Mike Doyle, will bring together presidents of the town’s sporting clubs.

Key players from the Department of Sport and Recreation, Garnduwa, the Australian Sports Commission’s Active After School’s Program and Shire of Broome will outline their plans for the year during the breakfast.

Founder of the Broome Touch Association, Paul White will be the morning’s key note speaker. White stepped down from the Touch Association in 2008 after almost two decades in the top job. He will discuss the procedures he and the committee put in place to ensure a smooth succession.

Doyle said the president’s breakfast will be the first in a series of club development seminars and workshops hosted by the Shire of Broome in 2011. Each event will be devoted to assisting clubs and associations with their development and sustainability.

“Once again there are some new presidential faces in 2011 so the breakfast is a chance for them to meet representatives from our key sporting organisations,” he said. “There are also a few wily veterans who are contemplating stepping away from their sport after many years. Hopefully listening to one of their peers discuss the topic will benefit them and their club. At the very least the free breakfast will be the Shire’s way of wishing all our dedicated volunteers good luck in 2011.”

For details on the breakfast contact Shire of Broome Club Development Officer Mike Doyle on 9191 3439.

Clubs Speedsharing Evening a Hit!

Fullname:Shane Fraser
The City of Bayswater and City of Swans first Club Speedsharing evening was a hit with local clubs.

Over 10 local clubs attended the evening and took advantage of each others expereinces to increase their knowledge of Volunteer Management, Facility Development and Fundraising Initatives.

Despite the low number of clubs present, there was a large variety of subjects raised and im sure each club took something away with them.

A big thanks to the team at Midland Sports Complex for playing host and finally to the club officials who took the time out of their busy week.  I'm sure you will be rewarded for your time in the long run.

The volunteer thankyou went really well and it was great to see everyone there.  Seems like its ages since I have seen some of the vollies who turned up to be recognised. As usual they all wanted to acknowledge everyone in their club.  That's what makes volunteers so special.  They never realise how much their contribution means!

HAVING A BABY

Fullname:Alison Reliti
My lovely husband and I are going to have a baby. I will be leaving on maternity leave in October and thought that you might like to catch up with me before I go.

I will be in the office most days so please feel free to give be a buzz, drop and say hi, or just flick me an email to let me know that you care!

Baby is due 26 November and this will be our first so a little scared.  Anyone with GOOD stories is most welcome to call and put my mind at ease!

See you all soon at our Member Protection Workshop!
