The Gap Program was attended by 56 gifted, young athletes from across the Mid West, from a range of sports including soccer, tennis, cricket, swimming, netball, baseball, hockey, surf life saving, karate, touch, AFL, basketball, badminton and small bore rifle.

Developed by DSR in partnership with WAIS, the GAP program aims to develop the life skills of young country sports stars who are supported by Healthway through the Smarter than Smoking Country Sport Scholarship program, giving them an even greater chance to succeed at the top level. Athletes from DSR supported Regional Talent Squads, as well as athletes identified through their regional development officer attended the camp.

The program is run in two streams – an Introductory stream for 12–14 year olds and an Advanced stream with an overnight stay for 15–21 year olds.

The GAP participants took part in a range of workshops on topics like nutrition, injury, time management, athlete support, pathways and transitions, along with talks, activities and team building activities.

The program aims to address some of the issues faced by regional athletes as a result of their distance from facilities, competitions and development opportunities.
