Funding gets facilities back up and running
The building of new and upgrades to existing sport and recreation facilities in the Gascoyne during the past two years has been central to the community’s recovery from devastating floods that plagued the region in 2010/11.
01 May 2012
Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) Gascoyne Manager Salvatore Siciliano said individual and co-operative ventures with DSR, the Gascoyne shires, Lotterywest and the Gascoyne Development Commission (GDC) had been of great assistance to affected organisations throughout the Gascoyne.
“The 2010/11 floods devastated nine clubs’ facilities in Carnarvon and Upper Gascoyne. Thanks to the many dedicated volunteers within these clubs and with the assistance of funding through GDC, Shire of Carnarvon, DSR as well as donations from other sporting clubs and companies such as Horizon Power and the Commonwealth Bank, all these clubs are now back to being operational again,” Mr Siciliano said.
“In the period between 2010 and 2012, more than $3.3 million has been invested into sport and recreation facilities in the Gascoyne region.
“Having safe, modern and sustainable facilities in our communities is vital to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to be physically active in a variety of sport and recreation activities.”
Funding for facilities is available from the GDC through the Gascoyne Regional Grants Scheme, Minor Grants Rounds and Royalties for Regions; and through DSR’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.
