Edmund Rice Centre Lions back for 2011
The Edmund Rice Centre (ERC) Lions have had a busy start to season 2011.
19 April 2011
As well as starting training in early March, the team represented AFL football at the Come and Try Day at Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka. There they taught football skills to young people and ran an exhibition match.
In the first two days of April the Lions delivered AFL sessions to young people from refugee backgrounds as part of their commitment to community service. These sessions were well received and a great time was had by all.
The Lions will play their first game for the season against Kingway Football Club at Skeit Road, Darch on Wednesday 20 April at 6pm. Supporters are encouraged to attend. The team also has a Facebook page.
The ERC Lions is an Australian Rules football team of newly arrived young people formed in March 2010. The team has a new group of players for 2011.
The team is coached and captained by the Sports Team of the Edmund Rice Centre Mirrabooka Youth Leadership Group and past Lions players and is supported by the WA Football Commission, the Department of Sport and Recreation and other sponsors.
The team is looking to build a supporter base to provide a huge home ground atmosphere for all its matches.
The Lions is a community team dedicated to serving their community. Improving the leadership qualities of these wonderful young people is also a focus of the ERC through football training and a leadership development program.
It is hoped the players will inspire other young people who come to Australia, to play football, act as positive role models and serve their community through sport.
The Lions train at Barry Britton Reserve, Balga Avenue, Balga on Wednesdays and Fridays at 4.30pm.
