Sport and recreation for people with disabilities
Recreation and sport make an important contribution to the health and wellbeing of all people, including people with disabilities. The barriers that once prohibited people with disabilities from enjoying the benefits of sport are rapidly disappearing.
Recreation and sport make an important contribution to the health and wellbeing of all people, including people with disability. The barriers that once prohibited people with disability from enjoying the benefits of sport are rapidly disappearing.
This trend has been as a result of a solid campaign of public education, encouragement of people with disability to participate in sport, making modifications to sports equipment, rules and facilities to enable people with disability to experience the same thrills and excitement that sport brings to their able bodied counterparts.
The Department of Sport and Recreation is committed to ensuring that people with disability, their families, carer's and organisations have access to the range of services that DSR provides.
In consultation with organisations providing services for people with disability, the department is a provider of grants funding and consultancy services, and is strategically positioned to ensure that the needs of people with disability are addressed by organisations which receive funding for programs, facilities and other infrastructure projects.
