Climate Change a hot topic for Peel
The impact Climate Change could have on sport and recreation in the Peel region was the hot topic at a seminar hosted by the Department of Sport and Recreation in July.
18 August 2010
Thirty-three people from the City of Mandurah, Shire of
Murray, City of Rockingham and Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale turned out to
hear from two knowledgeable presenters on the topic – DSR Senior Planning
Officer Greg McLennan, and Landscape System Ecologist Dr Dave Dealey.
The free event for decision makers, and anyone else interested in the topic, looked at ways in which local governments could address this critical issue. It also explored a process known as Adaptive Scenario Planning, and its application in a sport and recreation context.
DSR Director General Ron Alexander was among those in attendance, encouraging local governments to take action and plan for the future.
With the forecast for coming years being drier summers and more severe storms, affecting not only the immediate weather patterns but also the facilities we use in the home, for sport and in the community, we need to get smarter on how energy is used and harnessed.
As impacts from the weather and a shortage of energy products such as oil, gas and coal become issues, we will need to recycle much more than we are currently able.
All of these factors have the potential to impact you and your leisure activities.
