Celebration of volunteers a decade in the making
Next year (2011) marks the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteering (IYV+10). This provides a great opportunity to promote and recognise the enormous contribution volunteers make to sport and recreation in Western Australia.
15 December 2010
The inaugural International Year of Volunteering in 2001
served to celebrate and recognise the extensive and selfless contribution
of volunteers to their communities.
Over the past 10 years, volunteerism in Western Australia has grown to the extent that some 600,000 volunteers contribute an estimated $6.6 billion to our State economy.
Volunteering extends to all sectors of the community, in fields such as education, environment, culture and the arts or sport, to name a few. Without volunteers the social and economic wellbeing of this State would be much less secure.
The coming year, 2011, will mark 10 years
since the International Year of Volunteering in 2001. This presents a timely opportunity to reflect
on past achievements and look towards what can be advanced over the next
decade. Western Australia is situated in prime
position to continue its social and economic growth and this will be supported
greatly by volunteers.
It is planned that events and activities occurring throughout 2011 will provide an opportunity for volunteers to be recognised for their valuable role in the community and to promote volunteering as a worthwhile and an achievable activity for everyone to undertake.
The Department of Sport and Recreation will be developing some strategies in partnership with the industry to both recognise and support volunteers in sport and recreation and promote IYV+10.
