2012 Coaches Award recipients.

Organised by the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR), the awards recognise and reward coaches’ outstanding contribution and commitment to sport in Western Australia in community and high performance categories. Master of Ceremonies was Tim Gossage.

Each sport had the opportunity to put forward their High Performance Coach of the Year and Community Coach of the Year, and those chosen for the honour were acknowledged at the dinner in front of their peers.

DSR People Development Project Officer Aaron Morse said the contribution of sports coaches to our state was significant.

“Whether it be at the community or high performance level, coaches act as mentors and have the potential to positively influence athletes and participants and, importantly, their success and enjoyment of sport,” Mr Morse said.

“It is so important that we recognise and celebrate the achievements of coaches, who contribute so much to our state and its communities – sport wouldn’t happen without them.”

Five coaches recognised with awards shared their stories through an on-stage interview: Lachlan Stevens (Western Warriors Head Coach), Craig O'Reilly (Perth Thundersticks), Vicki Delves (Triathlon), Justin ‘JR’ Rogers (Gridiron) and Michael Hyde (petanque).

“The interviews gave us an insight into coaching at both the high performance and community levels and the coaches’ journeys in both of these areas,” Mr Morse said. “It was a great night and our congratulations to all the Coaches of the Year on their well-deserved recognition.”
