The squad of 17 will take on the State’s best in the Country Week Championships.

The Carnarvon under-11s squad will carry the hopes of the region when it attends the championships, being held in Perth from 27 September to 1 October.

The squad is in for a pretty hectic time, as they will initially play two matches a day against the best from all over the State in the lead up to the finals.

Carnarvon is grouped with teams from Newman, Karratha, Esperance, Geraldton, Albany, and Leeuwin. The players are quite confident they have what it takes to perform well.

“We are training very hard every Monday and Friday evening and the coach reckons while we’ve got a long way to go, he is confident we will put in a good show,” said player Jack Agostino.

“All the players are starting to believe in themselves. As the coach says; ‘it’s a funny old game and anything could happen’.”

While in Perth, the team will stay at the Department of Sport and Recreation’s Woodman Point Recreation Camp, which is close to the championship venue in Spearwood.

The team effort doesn’t just start and finish on the pitch. Players’ parents have volunteered their time to drive the Police Citizens Youth Club bus to Perth and will be helping with meals and cleaning uniforms.

“We’re really excited, because it’s the first trip to Perth, and because it’s the first time we’ve sent a team to the Country Week carnival for 10 years,” said team member Matthew Durmanich.

In order to make the trip the team had to do plenty of fundraising, which included sausage sizzles and running raffles. Local businesses including Woolworths, Carnarvon Sports, the Gascoyne Hotel and the Caltex Service Station have all provided assistance.
