Programs at Woodman Point

Structured programs have been offered at Woodman Point since 1994.

These have since evolved to contain some 21 distinct programs, with an additional range of program variations, training packages, workplace adventures, custom programs, self-directed activities and holiday programs.

The primary strategy outcome of the programs offered at our camp supports our department’s emphasis on promoting healthy, active lifestyles. By incorporating participation in recreation and physical activity during camping experiences, recreation programs provide a chance for the camp guests to experience new activities, explore the benefits of physical activity, and promote the maintenance of healthy lifestyles.

In order to meet these outcomes, the Woodman Point Camp operates on the ethos of Challenge by Choice.

Challenge by Choice

All camp instructors facilitate programs in accordance with the philosophy of ‘Challenge by Choice’. This is based on experiential learning theory, which we define as being able to undertake an experience that a participant can relate back to their life or existing lifestyle in a positive way.

There is an understanding that everyone has varying thresholds for challenge and these challenges can range in their nature and variety.  We aim to provide an experience that enables participants to determine their own level of challenge and broaden and develop their perceived limitations through participation in adventure activities both in individual and team environments.

All camps staff will aim to provide a safe experience in which the participant can explore and extend their abilities and limitations. Our DSR Camps Program Standards and Instructor Code of Ethics encompass that overriding intent.  Participation through excessive pressure and intimidation will not be supported by DSR Camps.

This ethos recognises that the attempt is more significant than the result.

Programs

Custom packages can be developed for clients upon request. Woodman Point Camp has a range of exciting workplace adventure programs specifically developed for corporate team building days. Please contact Woodman Point Camp directly for more information.
Woodman Point archery

Land programs

Archery (Years 4+)

Archery is a challenging recreation program that tests participants’ aim and patience. Using recurve bows, participants shoot for ‘Olympic-style’ bullseye targets and develop their technique. Participants will learn the different parts of the bow and arrow and will be shown correct procedure and technique for loading and releasing.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Escape from Quarantine (Years 4+)

Escape from Quarantine is a night, team game based on the history of the Woodman Point Quarantine Station. Participants are required to act as patients and are to collect various objects scattered around the campsite to escape from the confinement of quarantine. Participants must escape before the quarantine station guards (adults, teachers or instructors) do their cell checks and find that they are missing. Participants will need to work in teams to find items, however the search may be hindered as guards may spot them while they are looking for items.

This program can be self-directed for school groups at appropriate charge.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Historical Night Tour (Years 6+)

The Historical Night Tour takes participants back in time when the camp was known as Woodman Point Quarantine Station (1886–1979). The tour takes the participants through the grounds of the modern campsite and sand tracks of the neighbouring regional park where they will learn about the original uses of various buildings and sites and some of the tragic stories that were lived out during the quarantine days. If requested we can include a few scary ‘ghost’ stories from staff about the Woodman Point site.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Icebreakers (Years 4+)

Icebreakers are a set group of concise games that aid in introductions, group cohesion and are, most importantly, fun. They are a great way to begin and build the spirit of your camp.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Kite Making (Years 3+)

A program where participants can design, build and fly their own kite. Participants are able to show their creative side when designing and decorating their kites. They then construct them from the various materials provided and have the chance to see how they fly at the end of the session.

This program can be self-directed for school groups at appropriate charge.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Orienteering (Years 3+)

Orienteering is an exploration program in which participants search and locate markers in a surrounding area in a set time period. Participants are split into groups and given a topographical map to locate markers in a logical order dependent upon allocated points and location. Participants gain valuable experience in map reading skills, teamwork, verbal communication, collaboration, cooperation and decision making.

This program can be self-directed for school groups at appropriate charge.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Search and Rescue (Years 5+)

Search and Rescue requires participants to form two teams and locate hidden items spread over the campsite, as indicated on a map handed out at the beginning of the program. Each team has a two-way radio to communicate with the other team and program instructors. To make matters more interesting, there is a time limit to find all the items and instructors are enemy agents who can chase (and hinder) or be chased by (and perhaps help) group members. Search and Rescue is a team-based program that focuses on cooperation, communication, decision making and basic map reading skills. The program challenges participants to develop analytical and interpersonal skills.

Team Building (Years 5+)

Participants progress through a variety of team building tasks that enhance their interpersonal and problem solving skills. These tasks have been developed so students can practice and develop communication, cooperation, trust, conflict resolution and decision making skills in a team environment. This program can also be delivered at the beach, or indoors if required.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Ultimate Sports (Years 4+)

Ultimate Sports is a wide range of games and activities that include frisbee, baseball, dodge ball, basketball and Vortex leader ball. All games are high energy and focus on team interaction and having fun!

Roping programs

Abseiling (Years 7+)

Abseiling is an individual challenge at height where participants are let down over an edge using a range of specialist equipment. Participants descend using a safety line by qualified instructors to ensure their safety. Each participant is taught the safety aspects of abseiling from fitting a harness, to correct use of descending devices and correct abseiling skills and techniques.

Flying Fox (Years 4+)

Flying Fox allows participants to traverse at high speed, nine metres in the air, along a steel cable across 100 metres. Participants work in small teams in order to dismount peers quickly and safely and attain as many opportunities as possible on the Flying Fox.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

High Ropes (Years 8+)

A series of unique wire rope traverses are conducted at nine metres above the ground within the CUBE. Participants are attached to a harness and belayed by supporting members of their team on the ground. The high ropes course tests the climber’s individual physical skills, emotions and trust levels of the peers in their group.

Rock Climbing (Years 6+)

Rock Climbing requires participants to ascend a variety of artificial walls while being belayed by peers within their group. Each participant learns how to belay a climber and perform pre-climb checks for safety. Our climbing walls cater for a variety of participants, from simple climbs to more challenging routes.

Vertical Challenge (Years 6+)

Participants scale a range of vertical elements that are secured from the roof of the CUBE. Participants who are climbing are required to set goals and test their emotions. Elements include the caving ladder, caterpillar, dangle duo and cylinder cargo net. Participants are attached to a harness and work in teams to belay the climber.
Woodman Point raft building

Water programs

Raft Building (Years 5+)

Raft Building is a fun team experience where participants construct a raft out of simple materials including ropes, planks and drums. Instructors then challenge teams on a variety of tasks that test the durability of the raft on the water. Participants are also taught basic concepts and techniques that can be applied to other paddling activities. Raft Building is a unique team building program, aimed at encouraging groups to work together effectively.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Snorkelling (Years 6+)

During Snorkelling participants learn basic skills and techniques to discover local marine life in an underwater environment. Participants gain knowledge, understanding and develop basic Snorkelling and safety skills to demonstrate during the program and recreate in the future.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.

Surf Life Saving (Years 6+)

Surf Life Saving is a program where participants gain knowledge of safe practices at the beach. Participants learn about sun-safe practices, rips, currents and formal communication strategies while at the beach. Participants also practice and demonstrate surf skills which include flag racing, beach running and how to use surf equipment (rescue tubes and boards) in rescue situations. This program can be tailored to meet specific requirements of the group.

Surf Ski Paddling (Years 7+)

Surf Ski Paddling is an exciting way to explore the local coastline. Each participant is given expert instruction on how to handle a coastal sit-on-top kayak, capsize drill and guidance as they complete a series of team and individual tasks around the bay.

This program can be modified to accommodate participants with mobility restrictions. This must be discussed with your program coordinator well in advance of your camp.
