Burns survey answers

The aim of this survey was to assess knowledge of burns first aid in the community. This survey was designed for completion by high school students and older adults. Your honest responses helped us in the education for prevention of burns and burn injuries.

SCENARIO 1: A two-year-old boy dressed in a t-shirt and nappy reaches up to the counter and pulls a kettle of boiling water onto himself. What would you do in the first 10–15 minutes?

  1. Leave all clothing intact, wrap in clean towel and seek help
  2. Leave all clothing intact and cool with iced water
  3. Remove all clothing and apply ice packs
  4. Remove all clothing and cool with running water for 20 minutes

SCENARIO 2: A 10-year-old girl is camping with her family and wanders bare foot into the smouldering embers of a campfire. What would you do in the first 10–15 minutes?

  1. Immediately put out fire, wrap in clean towel and seek help
  2. Leave fire alone and cool foot with iced water
  3. Transport to nearest hospital and apply ice packs
  4. Immediately access cool running water for 20 minutes

SCENARIO 3: A 25-year-old man is at a party. He is standing close to a candle and his shirt catches fire. What would you do in the first 10–15 minutes?

  1. Leave all clothing intact, drop to ground and douse in cold water

  3. Remove all clothing, apply ice packs
  4. Remove all clothing and cool with running water for 20 minutes

SCENARIO 4: A 30-year-old lady is cleaning her swimming pool and some hydrochloric acid splashes onto her face. What would you do in the first 10-15 minutes?

  1. Leave all clothing intact, wrap in a clean towel and seek help
  2. Leave all clothing intact, drop to ground and douse in cold water
  3. Leave all clothing intact, instruct her to jump into swimming pool
  4. Remove all clothing and cool in shower for 20 minutes

Burns First Aid tips

  1. COOL the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes.
  2. REMOVE affected clothing or jewellery (not stuck to the skin).
  3. COVER burn with clean cotton cloth.
  4. SEEK medical assistance if burn:
    • is bigger than 20 cent coin; or
    • is on face, hands, feet, groin; or
    • shows any sign of infection.

CALL 000 in an emergency.
