Active Regional Communities (ARC)

Active Regional Communities (ARC) caters for both sporting and active recreational groups through funding from the Sports Lotteries Account (sporting groups) and the Sports Wagering Account (active recreation groups).

Active Regional Communities is a Department of Sport and Recreation initiative aiming to increase the opportunities for country people to participate in sporting and active recreational activities in regional Western Australia. It supersedes the Country Package funding program and is tailored to meet the ever-changing demands and challenges of regional sport and active-recreation groups within the nine diverse regions of Western Australia.

Active Regional Communities consists of two components:

  1. Organisational Development (OD).
  2. Initiative Grants (IG).

Organisational Development aims to improve the quality of sporting and active recreation opportunities for regional Western Australians. It is made up of two investment areas, the Organisational Assistance Program (OAP) and the Organisational Sustainability Program (OSP).

Funding ranges from:

  • $2,000 to $7,000 per annum for OAP.
  • $7,001 to $15,000 per annum for OSP.

Funding rounds

Applications open 1 July.

Applications close 20 Sepetmber.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible for Organisation Development funding to apply if you are:

  • a regional sporting/club/active-recreation organisation recognised as the ‘peak’ regional representative body.
  • State Sporting Association or Industry Peak Body overseeing regional operations.

Initiative Grants are designed to support one-off sporting and recreational opportunities on a yearly basis. It is aimed predominantly at the club level or to those groups who are not part of Organisational Development. It is made up of six targeted initiatives:

Capacity Building – initiatives that improve the knowledge, skills and capabilities of people involved in a sport or active-recreation organisation.

Participation – initiatives that increase community and player participation with a focus on targeting new members.

Talent Development – initiatives that increase the opportunities for talented athletes, coaches and officials.

Event Management – assistance to host the running significant intra/inter regional competitions.

1st State Team Initiative Grant – 1st State Team recognises regionally-based athletes who have been selected to represent WA for the first time in a national event as an individual athlete or as part of a State team.

North West Travel Scheme Initiative Grant – North West Travel Scheme aims to encourage participation in identified sport and recreation activities for athletes (13-18) living in the regions of the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne/Murchison who are yet to qualify for State team representation.

With the exception of the initiatives of 1st State Team and North West Travel Scheme, Initiative Grants funds up to $5000 with organisations needing to demonstrate a significant contribution (up to 25%) towards the cost of the project/event and/or in-kind contribution.

1st State Team recognises regionally-based athletes who have been selected to represent WA for the first time in a national event as an individual athlete or as part of a State team.

Allocations are regionally specific, ranging from $300-$600 for individuals and $1000-$2000 for regions that qualify 4 or more athletes for the same State team.

Who is eligible?

  • Athletes aged 13-21 years selected to represent WA for the first time, permanently reside in regional WA.
  • Selected and endorsed by their SSA.

Who is not eligible?

  • Regional athletes who have relocated to Perth.

North West Travel Scheme aims to encourage participation in identified sport and recreation activities for athletes (13-18) living in the regions of the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne/Murchison who are yet to qualify for State team representation. Allocations vary per region.

Eligible activities

  • Regular competitions recognised by a state
    controlling body;
  • Travel to training and development camps;
  • Representative fixtures (excluding State and National) and carnivals; and
  • Inter-town journeys over 500km return.

Activities not eligible

  • School sport activities
  • Travel to State and National events
