Adventure tourism a risky business in New Zealand

Bridge swinging, jet boat riding, heli skiing, climbing and rafting are just some of the adventure activities the New Zealand Department of Labour (DOL) will being assessing in terms of their risk management and safety provisions.

This has come about due to the number of deaths and serious injuries over the past five years in adventure tourism in New Zealand.

The review will be conducted by DOL and will be overseen by a governance group that will include representatives from central and local government and national organisations that are involved in the outdoor and tourism sectors.

The review will look at the profile of the sector, accident and injury occurrences and the safety management framework. It will also compare its profile and practices against other countries such as Australia, United Kingdom, France and USA.

Over the past five years, 29 participants have died (and at least 540 have been seriously injured) when participating in adventure tourism activities in New Zealand.
