Adventure Activity Standards
The Adventure Activity Standards (AAS) are a set of minimum standards for the conducting of group outdoor adventure activities in Western Australia.
The Western Australian Government established a taskforce to analyse issues surrounding visitor safety in adventurous outdoor activity following an incident in the state's north several years ago.
review of adventure tourism visitor safety in WA resulted in a total of 24
recommendations to the government. The Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR)
was funded to progress the implementation of the AAS as one of these
All states of Australia have AAS in place or are working towards developing a set of standards.
Upon examining the various issues and logistics, DSR made available a grant to Outdoors WA – the peak industry representative body for outdoor adventurous activity – to develop a set of AAS for WA. The standards have been determined by industry experts.
Outdoors WA and DSR are initiating a review of the leadership requirements in the AAS.
