South West Academy of Sport
The South West Academy of Sport program is unique and plays a vital role in the regional sports system by enabling State Sporting Associations to develop an infrastructure that provides a sequential pathway for talented regional athletes to achieve their potential in sport.
The South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) commenced operations in 2008 to provide support for talented young athletes, helping them to reach state, national and international levels of competition.
An individual scholarship program and talent development pathways – through SWAS partner sports including AFL, football (soccer), basketball, hockey, cricket, netball and tennis – gives local athletes the best possible chance of making it to the top of their sport.
Access to top tier coaches, specialist training and services such as sports psychology and nutrition round out the program and present athletes with the skills to build a long and rewarding career in sport.
SWAS is designed to enhance training and support at a local level for up-and-coming athletes pursuing sporting excellence. It removes the burden of travel to the metropolitan area for those already aspiring to the elite level of sport and create new opportunities for future champions.
The academy aims to develop the talent of athletes in their chosen sport and educate them with life skills such as nutrition, fitness, injury prevention and career counselling to hold them in good stead for a future in sport.
