The appointment of a design consultant is the final step in the facility planning process. It follows the:
- strategic plan or needs assessment;
- feasibility study;
- management plan; and
- project design brief.

Appointing and managing a design consultancy has some key elements:
- determining the need for a design consultant;
- preparation of the consultant’s brief;
- evaluation of submissions.;
- engagement of the selected consultant(s);
