Town of Port Hedland clubs get a new supporter
Sport and recreation clubs in Hedland have a new supporter with the appointment of a Club Development Officer (CDO) based in the Town of Port Hedland.

Department of Sport and Recreation Manager Pilbara Nick Sloan said Sarah Cunningham had been appointed to the CDO position, and would fill an important need in the town.
“One of the priorities of the Club Development Officers is to work with local sporting and recreation groups and associations to develop and grow their clubs into sustainable, more efficient organisations, by assisting them with member retention, increasing inclusivity, accessing funding and training, developing club members and increasing volunteers,” Mr Sloan said.
“The CDOs are also responsible for developing contacts and networks with local sport and recreation groups and associations, liaising regularly with the clubs and other stakeholders, and ensuring the community is aware of sport and recreation opportunities that exist in their regions.”
Mr Sloan said Sarah was part of a network of 18 CDOs servicing 33 local governments state-wide, who were funded by DSR. The department is working in partnership with the various local governments, where the CDOs are based.
DSR initially provided $1.96 million in funding for the scheme over a three year period from 2006/07, and in April 2009, the Minister approved funding of $2.55 million to continue and grow the scheme over a further three years.
“Sport and recreation clubs are vital to communities, helping to make them stronger and safer, and the individuals within them happier and healthier,” DSR Director General Ron Alexander said.
“Nowhere are they more vital than in the regions, where clubs form the hub of community life.
“I know Port Hedland clubs are working hard under often difficult circumstances to deliver sporting opportunities for the local community, and the appointment of a Club Development Officer will assist them to continue providing the important service they deliver to their community.”
There are now CDOs funded in the City of Bayswater/City of Swan, Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley/Shire of Halls Creek, Shire of Broome, City of Geraldton-Greenough, Shire of Irwin, North Eastern Wheatbelt Regional Organisations of Councils (Shire of Koorda/Nungarin/Mukinbudin/Mt Marshall/Trayning/Westonia/Wyalkatchem), City of Joondalup/City of Wanneroo, City of Gosnells, City of Canning, City of South Perth/Town of Victoria Park, Shire of West Arthur, shires of Cranbrook/Plantagenet/Denmark, City of Bunbury, shires of Gnowangerup/Kojonup/Broomehill/Tambellup/Kent, Shire of Coolgardie, City of Rockingham and Town of Kwinana.
Clubs in the Town of Port Hedland can contact their CDO, Sarah Cunningham, on 9158 9300.
