Basketball challenge puts the ball in the Pilbara's court
The Pilbara Basketball Challenge was recently held in Wickham with 350 people attending the event, and 32 teams consisting of men, women and children participating in the challenge.
07 December 2009
The carnival was an initiative of Roebourne and Wickham community members, and after the success of the challenge, organisers are looking at making this an annual event.
“We love playing in these events, we get to catch up with family and love to play in different towns, to see the towns” and “Carnivals provide good strong inter-town rivalry” were just some of the comments made about the event on the day.
Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) Indigenous Sports Development Officer Victor Bellotti said basketball carnivals in the North West were extremely well supported by towns and communities near and far.
“The Pilbara Basketball Challenge brought these communities together and highlighted their interest in sport,” Mr Bellotti said.
“The event also highlighted the commitment from volunteers to support the day and strengthened relationships with local service providers.”
The event was supported by DSR, Rio Tinto, Mawarnkarra Health Service, NYFL, WA Police and the strong community leaders.
