South West's scholarship winners
Congratulations to our South West Healthway Smarter than Smoking Country Sport Scholarship Recipients for 2009. Sixty-eight South West athletes involved in 20 different sports competing at national and international level were awarded scholarships this year from a pool of over 200 applicants state-wide.

Let's meet our successful recipients for 2009 who were recently awarded their scholarships at a special ceremony in the South West:
Archery
Kristie Cabrini, 15
Member of the Junior State Team since 2007. Involvement in WA Junior State Team event at National Australian Championships resulted in 2nd and 3rd placings. Two gold medals in Individual events. Numerous titles at state and interclub competitions.
Kayla Cabrini, 13
Represented WA for the first time in 2009 as part of the State 13 and 17-year-old teams. Won two gold medals in Individual events and placed 2nd and 3rd in State Team events.
Athletics
Thomas Quaife, 15
Represented WA at the Australian Little Athletics Championships 2009 in the U/15 Multi Event. Placed 7th overall in Australia achieving a gold medal and four top 10 placings. Won one gold and three silver at U/15 State Country Championships. Two silver medals at U/15 State Championships.
Shenae Peterson, 14
2008 State Team Captain. Won a gold and silver medal at the National Championships. Selected for Pan Pacific Games. Was 2009 State Multi Champion for U/14 girls. Won four gold and one bronze medal at the State Championships. Selected to represent WA in seven events at a friendly international in Kuala Lumpur in June 2009, where she broke two records and was recognised as the ‘Athlete of the Meet’.
Breanna Dixon, 13
Achieved top 10 places in three events at the 2009 National Championships.In the State Championships she won gold in the 200m, and bronze in the 100m and long jump events. Won bronze in the State Multi Event Championships.
Axemen
Mitchell Clarke, 20
2009 Axeman of Year for Western Australia. Achieved selection into the U/21 Australian Team (winning series), and selection into the 2008 and 2009 State Teams.
Basketball
Tyler Hickert,16
Attended Basketball Australia development camps in both U/18 and U/19 age groups. Represented WA at U/16 State Country Championships. At the U/18 State Country he was 3rd overall in rebounds and 8th in scoring. Received a NITCP Scholarship in 2009.
The recipients featured below are all part of basketball’s Intensive Training Centre Program at the state level, and have represented WA in State Country Development Squads or teams at National Championships: Connor Bradbury (14), Tim Davis (17), Carey Watkins (14), Sam Fossati (16), Ryan Smith (17), Jeremy Paull (17), Dena English (15), Shannon McRobert (16), Bianca Donovan (16), Jess Cameron (16), Nardia Klemm (16).
Bowls
Scott Pennington, 15
Scott and his partner won the State Junior U/18 Pairs in 2008 and again in 2009. Was in winning team for the U/18 State Fours this year. Selected in the State Junior Boys Squad since 2008. In 2009 he was selected in the State Junior Boys U/18 Team to represent WA and play in the National Junior Championships. Achieved bronze medal in the Triples at this event.
Cricket
Sam Whiteman, 17
Represented WA in the U/15’s team in 2007. Toured England with the National U/16’s team. In 2008, he represented WA at the U17’s National Championships and was in the U/19 State Development Squad. In 2009, represented WA in the U/17’s National Championships and was selected in the U19’s One Day Match playing against India. Selected to play in the U/19’s One Day Match against Sri Lanka in October. Named in Australian U/19’s World Cup Squad of 30.
Jacob Whiteaker, 17
Debuted in the WA Cricket Association 1st Grade competition at age 16, scoring a maiden century in his first season. Played in the WA State U/17’s National Carnival in January 2009 and was WA's third highest run scorer. Training in WA U/19’s Squad for national carnival to be held in Canberra in December.
BMX/Cycling /Mountain Biking
Lauren Reynolds, 18
Was runner-up at the 2008 World Junior Elite Championships but still retained her overall No. 1 World Ranking. Won the Australian Champion Pro Bike Series and the UCI Oceania. Is in the Australian Team and currently racing in the World Cup Series competitions where she had the fourth fastest time.
Jaymin King, 16
Competed in National Series of competitions since 2007, consistently achieving top 10 results. In 2008 National Championships he was a quarter finalist and in 2009 a semi finalist. Was first selected into WA Talent ID Squad in 2007 and retains this position in 2009. Recently competed in World Championships and achieved a semi final finish. Currently ranked 13th in the world for the 16 boys age group. Was State Series winner (for 16 boys) and runner up in the Pro Open Championship.
Rowan Brown, 16
Mountain Biking is Rowan’s main sport, but also competes in road cycling races. At age 16 he is competing in Open teams and Expert Men Mountain Bike races around the country. Selected into the 2008 WA State Team and again in 2009. Has won all of the State Rounds he competed in this year at the Expert level. Won the ‘La Grande’ 40km Mountain Bike Race (300 competitors).
Bradley Linfield, 14
2008 winner of the U/15 State Team Time Trial Championship. In 2009 he was 2nd in the U/17 Individual State Criterion Championship and 3rd in the U/17 State Road Race Championship. Has been in the South West Jets Development Squad for two years. In 2009 he won the U/17 Junior Road Series Points competition.
Equestrian
Paris Hawken, 17
Was in the 2008 WA State Eventing competition and placed 1st in the B Grade Teams Event. Went on to achieve 1st place in the A Grade State Eventing Leaderboard. Selected into 2009 State Eventing Development Squad.
Football – AFL
Anthony Morabito, 17
Selected into 2007 WA State 16's team for the NAB AFL Championships. In 2008 selected into the AIS/AFL Academy, the WA State U/18's and played for the Peel Thunder Football Club Colts team. In 2009 he continued to play in the WAFL competition for Peel Thunder Football Club’s League team. Won the WAFL 2009 Rising Star Award. Selected into NAB AFL U/18’s team. Named in the 2009 All Australian Team. Attended AFL 2009 Draft Camp. Expected to be a high draft pick in this year’s AFL draft.
Clinton Garlett, 18
Selected to represent WA in the 2007 WA State 16's NAB AFL Championships. In 2008, played football for the Swan Districts Football Club Colts team that won WAFL Colts Premiership. Played for Carey Park Football Club in South West Football League Senior team, which won 2008 Premiership. Represented Australia in international match against South Africa as AIS/AFL Academy member. Played senior football in 2009 for Swan Districts Football Club. Selected in the NAB AFL U18’s team in 2009.
Alex Devitt, 16
Participated in Peel Thunder Development Squad in the AFL 16’s carnival 2009. Selected into WA State Football Academy for 2009. Represented WA in the recent NAB AFL State 16’s Championships. Member of 2009 Eaton Boomers Football Club Colts Premiership team in South West Football League.
Football – Soccer
Natasha Rigby, 16
Selected into WA State U/15's and U/17's teams. Selected into South West Academy of Sport in 2008/09. Named 2008 Associations Player of the Year (Margaret River). Member of National Training Centre. Trains at WA Institute of Sport. In March 2009, gained selection in the U/17’s Team to represent WA at National Championships.
Domonique Fedele, 16
Selected into 2008 U/15 State Soccer Team. Represented WA in the 2009 U/17 State Team. Awarded Fairest and Best for Harvey Ladies Premiere Division.
Hockey – Men’s
Craig Leknys, 16
Member of the 2008 WA State Team for the U/15 National Championships, achieving 3rd place. Member of the State Level 2 Talent Squad, South West Academy of Sport and the 2008/09 State U/15 Men’s Team.
Ben Johnston, 15
Achieved selection into WA U/15 and U/16 State teams and U/15 and U/16 State Schoolboys teams. No. 1 goalkeeper at State level for the 2008 season. In Level 2 State Talent Squad.
Hockey – Women’s
Montanna Randall, 16
Member of WA Talent Squad since 2006. Member of South West Academy of Sport since 2008. Member of winning U/15 State Team at the National Championships in 2008. Member of 2009 State Schoolgirls Team.
Keeley Allsop, 16
Member of Regional Team since age 13. Represented WA in winning team at the U/15 National Championships 2008. Member of 2009 Level 3 State Talent Squad.
Aimee Harris, 16
In various State teams since 2007. Was in winning team in 2008 U/15 National Championships. Is in the Level 3 State Talent Squad for 2009. Member of South West Regional Team for 2007/2008. Selected into 2009 U/16 State School Team.
Courtney Barton, 16
Selected into 2008 U/15 State National Championship Team. Was in Level 2 Development Squad and U/15 Regional Team. Was in the 2009 Level 3 State Development Squad, South West Academy of Sport Elite Squad and U/16 State Schoolgirls Team.
Rollerskating – Artistic
At first there were three international artistic roller skaters in Bunbury – now there are four: Aleesha Hanczakowski (17), Allira Hanczakowski (15), Ebony Cassady (15), Bianca Dawson (15). All have achieved at local, interstate and international competitions – the most recent being to represent Australia at the 2009 Oceania Titles. Aleesha recently came 1st in the International Ladies Inline and Allira was 1st in the Junior International Ladies Figures. Both will represent Australia at the World Championships in Germany in November, and Ebony will join them to represent Australia at the 2010 Oceania Championships.
Rollerskating – Speed
Four skaters have achieved at the international level, and all have succeeded in their respective divisions: Jake Kerr (16), Stuart Reynolds (16), Jeremy Mason (15), Ryan Rowlandson (15), Johnathon Hegedus (13). Jake, Stuart and Jeremy were selected in the Australian Team for both the Oceania and World championships, while Ryan represented Australia at the Oceanias. Johnathon represented Western Australia for the first time in 2009.
Rowing
Alexandra Hagan, 18
Fifth in U/19 Single Sculls Race at 2008 Junior World Championships. Selected for 2009 National Championships and won four gold medals, one silver and one bronze in U/19 and Open races. Achieved many top three places from 2007 at state, national and international competitions. Selected in 2009 to row for Australia in Junior World Women’s Quad, where she won silver medal. Offered scholarship at Australian Institute of Sport and is aiming for 2012 Olympics.
David Prosser, 18
Represented Australia at recent World Junior Championships and the Youth Olympics. At the 2009 Australian Rowing Championships, won three gold medals in the U/19 Coxless Pair, Fours and Quad. Selected to represent Australia at World Junior Rowing Championships.
Nicole Depiazzi, 19
Regularly represented WA at various interstate competitions. Member of WA Team attending Australian National Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009. At 2009 Championships, placed 5th in the Open Lightweight Quad Race. Rowed at Australian Youth Olympics in 2007 and 2009 and every Australian Youth Cup (Trans Tasman) since 2006. At 2009 Trans Tasman she won gold in the Open Lightweight Quads.
Tamsyn Roberts, 16
Selected in first year to row for WA at 2008 National Championships and won gold in U/17’s Quad Race. In 2009, reached finals in U/23 Lightweight Quad Race and was 6th in U/23 Single Scull Race and Lightweight Coxless Quad Scull.
Shooting
Chris Gulvin, 19
Represented Australia in B Team in Open Division at 2008 Pacific Championships. State and National Team member for past five years. Represented Australia in the USA in team competition. His team came 2nd overall in the ‘Anysight 3P’ competition out of 60 teams competing. In 2008, was 2nd overall at State Titles and 4th overall at National Titles. In 2009 achieved seven gold medals in Air Rifle and NRA 3.40 competitions.
Squash
Emma Cornish, 13
Holds current No. 1 ranking for U/13 girls in WA. Member of State and Regional Development Squads. Part of WA Junior State Team. Attended Australian Junior Championships in October 2009.
Michelle Cornish, 13
Currently ranked No. 3 in WA in her age group. Regular member of State and Regional Development Squads. Part of WA Junior State Team. Attended Australian Junior Championships October 2009.
Surfing
Laura Macaulay, 17
State Champion in her age group for the past three years. Was 2nd in the U/16 National Championship in 2007 and equal 2nd in the U/19 in 2008. Achieved at international competitions in U/16’s and in Open section of World Qualifying Series in Perth 2009. Her world rating is now 51.
Bronte Macaulay, 15
Competing in age levels much higher than her age group. Gained 2nd place in the U/19’s at 2008 Australian Championships. U/16 State Champion in 2008 and 2009.
Creed McTaggart, 15
Taken out title of State Champion in each of the age groups he has competed in. Named U/12 Champion in 2005, U/14 Champion in 2006 and 2007, and U/16 Champion in 2008. Recently attended World ISA Titles in Ecuador, both as individual and Australian Team member. Finished 25 out of 96 in individual section, and Australian Team brought home gold medal.
Mikaela Greene, 15
Top achievement in 2008 was runner-up in the U/16 Junior Girls National Titles after winning WA State Title. Competed in many State 'rounds' such as Yallingup, Mandurah and Perth, consistently achieving top placings. Named Surfing WA Rising Star for National Titles achievements.
Swimming
Donovan Castelyn, 17
Competed at 2009 Australian Age Championships. Selected into WA State Team for 2008 Pacific School Games and won bronze medal and broke 17 years age group meet record for his 400m Individual Medley swim.Current State Title holder for 17–18 year age group for 200m Breaststroke, 200m Butterfly, 200m IM and 400m IM. Broke 63 State Country Records last season.
Kate Bird, 16
Selected into 2009/10 Regional Talent Development Squad and selected into WA State Team for 2009 School Sport Interstate Championships and 2008 Pacific School Games. Current State Title holder for 16 year age group for 1500m Freestyle. Broken eight State Country Records this season.
Lyndon Goldsmith, 15
Selected into 2009/2010 Regional Talent Development Squad. Selected into WA State Team for the 2009 School Sport Interstate Championships. Consistent State Country Championships medallist and a State Championships finalist.
Ryan Evernden, 15
Competed at both 2008 and 2009 Australian Age Championships. Selected into WA State Team for 2009 School Sport Interstate Championships and 2009 Pacific School Games. Selected into 2009/2010 Regional Talent Development Squad. Current State Title holder for 15 year age group in 50m and 100m Breaststroke, 200m IM, 400m IM and 400m Freestyle.
Adele Schultz, 14
Represented WA at 2009 State Age Team Championships. Competed at both 2008 and 2009 Australian Age Championships. Selected into WA State Team for the 2008 Pacific School Games. Selected for 2009/2010 Flippers State Youth Squad. Is the State Title holder for the 14 year age group in 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly.
Taekwondo
Amy Fortescue, 17
State Champion in Sparring in 14–17 age group since 2006. State Champion in Open Division in 2008. Consistently won top three places in Sparring at National Titles, winning gold in 2008 Open Division and 14–17 year age group. Attended Malaysian Open and Sports Taekwondo Australia National Sparring Championships as part of World Championship Selection Trials and Youth Olympic Games Selection Trials. Won silver at recent National Championships. Offered a place in Junior and Senior National Development Squad for 2010.
Jasmine Klumpp, 16
Won Australian Selection Trials in 2008. Represented Australia at 2nd World Culture Expo in U/18 Sparring (2nd) and Poomse (2nd) competitions. In 2009, won gold Sparring medal for her age/weight division and silver in Open Division at Australian Taekwondo Championships. This year won both U/18 Sparring State Championships and Open Sparring Championship.
Jake Klumpp, 15
Represented WA at 2008 National Championships, winning bronze in 14–17 age and weight division. In 2009, went on to gain silver for Sparring and bronze for Poomse at Perth Open Championships, again in his age and weight division. In this same division, succeeded in winning gold for Sparring and silver for Poomse.
Triathlon
Ryan Bailie, 18
Became U/19 World Olympic Distance Champion in September 2009. Represented WA since 2007 at various age competitions, always achieving high placings. In 2008 and 2009, was included in WA TEP Junior Squad after achieving national benchmark times. In 2008 achieved title of Australian Olympic Distance Age Champion (16–19). Selected to represent Australia in the 16–19 age group to race at World Championships. Is the WA Sprint and Olympic Distance Champion in the Open Division.
Alex Bailie, 18
As 2009 State Olympic Distance Champion, went on to represent Australia at World Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships. Was runner up for Triathlete of the Year Award 2009. Achieved many top placings in her races in recent years.
Ashlee Bailie, 16
Selected to represent WA for past five years. State Team Captain for 2009. Placed 15th in her first ITU race for 2009. State Junior Champion in sprint in 2008, and again in 2009. This year also won State Series Open Division – Elite and was selected into WA TEP Development Squad (the only female to qualify).
