BMX takes out both major awards at Goldfields Sports Star presentations
Despite being Black Friday, Kalgoorlie was preparing early for the major event of the sporting calender on Friday 13 November 2009 with 200 guests gathering in the Kalgoorlie town hall to find out who would be the Goldfields Sport Star of the Year.

Ten-year-old Laura Mclerie took out the Rising Sports Star Award for her efforts on her 20" BMX in the girls 10s division of the National Championships where she finished second in Australia to the current World Champion. She then went on to compete at the World Championships where she finished Runner-Up World Champion to Japan's Sae Hatakeyama in the final.
The 2009 Goldfields Sports Star of Year was won by another BMX rider of just 18 years old who competed in the 17–24 age division. Petra Brown, who can't decide whether to ride a BMX or take up dancing, placed first at the National Championships with minimal training prior to the event. She then went on to finish seventh in the world.
The Goldfields Sports Star of the Year Awards recognise excellence across all sports in the Goldfields.
The night was a huge success thanks to the Goldfields Sports Star committee and the long hours put in by Alison Pickett and Sharon Jessett from the Goldfields Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) office.
