Thirty-one athletes from a range of sports were presented with Smarter than Smoking scholarships, and two coaches and two officials Regional Coach and Official Scholarships, at a ceremony at Mandurah Quays Resort on Tuesday 13 October 2009.

WACA Development Officer Rockingham/Mandurah Tim Lees was the MC for the night, among his duties was introducing an array of insightful and entertaining speakers.

Presentations were made by Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) Director General Ron Alexander, who also provided some insight into sport and recreation in general, as well as what it is like to play and coach at an elite level. Rory O'Brien and Danny Chartres - members of the Peel Football Club leadership group - provided an entertaining insight to the highs and lows of life as an elite level athlete.

An annual initiative of DSR and Healthway, the STS scholarships are now in their fifteenth year and assist young regional athletes to overcome barriers such as distance from facilities, competitions, development opportunities and coaches in their pursuit of state and national representation.

Since 1995, Healthway has made more than $3 million available to be distributed as scholarships throughout regional Western Australia. This allocation of funds is managed and coordinated through DSR's regional offices. During this time, a total of 167 scholarships have been awarded in the Peel region alone. Forty-nine Peel athletes applied for the scholarships this year.
