New Indigenous Soccer Program kicks off

Football West, Football Federation Australia (FFA) and Department of Sport and Recreation Indigenous Sport Unit have teamed up to introduce a new initiative to the Indigenous Community of Western Australia.

27 August 2009

Beechboro Primary SchoolThe Indigenous Soccer Program aims to achieve Football West Development Officer Kerry Henry’s wish of bringing the world of football to all communities in WA, and give young people a taste for the game.

To date the Indigenous Soccer Program has targeted six schools in the Perth Metropolitan Area where a 4–6 week program was designed to suit the needs of each school.

Kerry said the program has been designed to incorporate skills development and small-sided, fun games, and that the program had so far been well-received.

To support ongoing participation, each school involved is given the opportunity to keep the equipment for its students to use.

Football West is also offering support to assist any child, parent and Aboriginal Islander Education Officer (AIEO) interested in taking up the sport – either in the capacity of playing the game or a coaching or officiating role – by providing them with relevant opportunities.

If anyone wants further information on the Indigenous Soccer Program at Football West please contact DSR Perth Metropolitan ISDO Officer Julie Jackson on 9492 9839.
