The mission statement

A mission statement contains key phrases that express:

… reason for being … purpose … why the organisation exists and what it is trying to achieve … how it wants to be seen …what it does … means to the end …

Why have one?

It communicates succinctly the essence of the organisation to its stakeholders and the public.

What we need to consider when developing a mission statement (when developing a mission statement, commence by listing the key words only):

  1. What is the purpose of our organisation (outcomes and results we want to achieve)?
  2. What business are we in (what do we do)?
  3. For whom is our organisation in business (who are our internal and external stakeholders)?
  4. What are our shared core values and beliefs (or guiding principles) that we practice in the delivery of our service?

Checklist

When you have completed your mission statement, does it incorporate the following:

  • Does it describe our uniqueness?
  • Is it realistic and forceful?
  • Does it provide options for growth and development?
  • Is it reviewed annually against the current environment?
  • Does everyone know it and understand it?
