Emerging Leaders Program
On Friday 27 February the Department of Sport and Recreation recognised its successful 2009 scholarship recipients for the Emerging Leaders Program at a networking breakfast at Subiaco Oval.
30 March 2009
This year, four Self-Directed Scholarships of up to $10,000, nine places in the workshop series and six Professional Governance Scholarships were awarded.
The Self-Directed Scholarships support successful applicants in pursuing professional development opportunities, while the workshop series, held over two years, aims to enhance the leadership capabilities of emerging leaders.
This was the first year of the Professional Governance Scholarships, which allow board members from key sport and recreation organisations to complete a Company Directors Course.
A separate $10,000 Heather MacGowan OAM Scholarship, open to young people aged between 18 and 30 years working in the sport and recreation industry, was this year awarded to Anna Sheppard from the Heart Foundation.
Department of Sport and Recreation Director General Ron Alexander said every industry needed competent and contemporary leaders.
"Through the leadership programs, our department each year invests significant funding into the future of the sport and recreation industry, which is also an investment in communities," Mr Alexander said.
"The role of sport and recreation in our communities becomes more vital day by day, as we battle to overcome health and social issues that result from our rapidly evolving and increasingly frenetic lifestyles.
"The Emerging Leaders program helps us to deliver what is certainly one of the most vital components of community life - leadership. Without innovative, visionary and inspiring leaders, society at all levels flounders, whether it be sport, government, business, or even a local community support group."
