Background of the Indigenous Sports Program
The Indigenous Sports Program is focused on creating an environment to increase Indigenous participation in organised sport and recreation from local grass root through to elite levels.
Community involvement is a crucial aspect of the
development and implementation of sport and recreation within
Indigenous communities and we aim to equip community members with the
knowledge and skills to be able to contribute positively to the
development of sporting and recreation initiatives.
The Indigenous Sports Program works with State
Sporting Associations to play a more active role in increasing
participation and skill development in the Indigenous community.
Partnerships with the State Sporting Associations aim to encourage Indigenous people to try new sports and then go on to join local sporting associations/clubs, the end result being to identify talent within these sports and develop pathways for the participants to engage the sport at the elite level.
