Dockers kick back in the Kimberley
The Fremantle Dockers could be found kicking back in the Kimberley last week as part of a very successful AFL Community Camp.
18 February 2009
The camp marked the first time an AFL club had ever officially visited the Kimberley.DSR Kimberley Manager Dean Holder said the club was embraced by the Broome community where they were based for the week's activities.
"Despite the camp being staged in the monsoonal wet season and with a tropical cyclone threatening, the visit provided many mutually beneficial sport development and community outcomes," Mr Holder said.
"This was the first time an AFL Club had ever officially visited the Kimberley and the Dockers were certainly embraced by the local Broome community and during their visits to the Dampier Peninsula, Bidyadanga and Derby."
The club staged a gala community coaching clinic and training session on the new floodlit ovals at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre, which have been substantially funded through DSR's Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) program.
This was the first time the facilities had been used and they received many positive reviews.
The DSR Kimberley office hosted a Sports Leaders Breakfast on Thursday morning where 35 invited guests received leadership tips and football club insights from Chris Bond, who is now the Manager of the Football Operations Department at the Fremantle Dockers club.
The Broome Sportshouse crew, including Garnduwa and Football Development Officer Brett Claudius, were sensational in providing much of the behind the scenes coordination prior to and during the week.
Other highlights included the presentation of Sporting Club Volunteer Recognition Awards at the Sportsman's Night and the staging of a 'Planning for the Future' Club Forum.
