Green Shirt Program logo The Green Shirt Program is based on a similar program developed by the South Australian Office for Recreation and Sport.

The objective is to reduce the incidence of abuse and harassment directed towards inexperienced officials and, as a result, improve retention rates at the grass roots level of sport.

The Green Shirt Program aims to:

  • make new officials easily identifiable, so that they are easy to recognise and support;
  • raise awareness and increase recognition and support for new officials;
  • reduce pressure and lessen abuse and conflict directed towards new officials;
  • create a culture of support for these new officials through the education of players, coaches, spectators and the media.

Coloured Shirt Program shirtThe Department of Sport and recreation worked in partnership with six sports to introduce the pilot in 2006/2007 – baseball, football (soccer), hockey, netball, touch and water polo.

Together we have helped clubs and associations build a culture of support for officials.

We look forward to our continued partnership and the growth of the program in these sports.

The initiative will involve new and existing officials who are still considered to be inexperienced.

The officials will be provided with an easily-identifiable coloured officials shirt. Sports will provide mentoring and support to the new official and promote and raise members' awareness of the program and its aims.

The Department of Sport and Recreation acknowledges the assistance of the South Australian Office for Recreation and Sport in the development of this program.
