Country Week winners on a good wicket
A team of Indigenous cricketers hailing from regions including Geraldton, Beverley, Albany and Peel, has defeated Albany to be crowned B Section winners in the 2009 CSBP Country Week Cricket Carnival 2009.
21 July 2009
The win was the icing on the
cake for the WA Indigenous XI team, which has notched up a great record at
Country Week since starting out in the D Section in 2005.
The team, whose ages range from three players under 16 to those in their 50s, went into the finals undefeated after convincing wins against Donnybrook-Capel, Wyalkatchem, Kalgoorlie (Social) and Port Hedland.
Oldest in the team is 51-year-old Keren Ugle, followed by Ashley Taylor (48). Youngest are 16-year-olds Jarrad Northover, Devyn Jackamarra (16) and Kirk Ugle (17).
Department of Sport and Recreation Indigenous Sports Development Officer Nick Abraham said the team was the result of the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA), WA Aboriginal Cricket Advisory Committee and DSR's Indigenous Sports Program's commitment to improving opportunities and development for Indigenous cricketers.
"The WA Indigenous XI team is mostly made up of players who have not been selected in their association team," Mr Abraham said.
"The team's development under the guidance of Chairperson Ashley Taylor and members of the WACA Committee is proving to be a great success story and an encouraging result for players and all involved in increasing opportunities for Indigenous cricketers in our state.
"Congratulations to Coach Aaron Hamilton, Captain Ashley Taylor, Vice-Captain and Selector Gerard Ugle, Manager Perry Ugle and the players themselves for their great achievement."
The WA Indigenous XI team will now compete in the A Grade at Country Week 2010.
More than 20,000 cricketers have participated in Senior Country Week since it started more than a century ago in 1907. About 20 per cent of Western Australian First Class cricketers were either born or played in country districts.
